I have export MOZILLA_HOME=/opt/netscape in my /etc/profile. I have never, ever had a problem. Java works fine in netscape. I don't know if perhaps there is a package you need installed (I thought netscape's java handling was independent of any other lib). Perhaps Bodo or someone more qualified can offer input. I have heard of people having problems with 4.05, but 4.03 and 4.04 have been ideal citizens on my box.
