DSL & ethernet card
I am getting DSL sometime in the next 2 - 3 weeks, and I need to get an ethernet card in order to hook up the modem (external). Any advice on a good card to use w/ SuSE? Or is there much difference in cards? Hi I had similar situation... Went to shop, took the cheapest card (unex 10/100 fast ethernet), and yast did auto-install it without no problem at all... it's been working since. Best value for money. Jaska. Viestissä Tiistai 30. Lokakuuta 2001 19:58, Cleary_Mike@emc.com kirjoitti:

I have tried several different cards. The ones I am using now are by 3com, which works great, but is kind of expensive. My other card is a Linksys, which works great, and is only about $20 US. I have tried 2 different D-Link cards, but had no success with either one. Hope this helps. Kevin -- Sleep is perhaps the only of life's great pleasures that need not be of short duration.

I like the 3com an intel cards. the linksys is cheaper an a good card but u can not bet the quality of intel an 3com.

Tried that, but still no go. I have no idea why not, since this is the driver that is recommended through the SuSE hardware database links. Did you have to do anything in particular when you compiled it? Thanks! Kevin -- Sleep is perhaps the only of life's great pleasures that need not be of short duration.

Thanks! Kevin Did you try the tulip driver? Failing that you might want to check www.scyld.com and see if your card is mentioned.

Nope! I just selected eth0 (or whatever ethx your card) and hardware and the modules section put 8139too and that is it. I was told some D-Link cards use via-rihne or tulip drivers have tried that. Regards, Alex :) Kevin L Hochhalter wrote:

Keep in mind that you get what you pay for, but here's my top 3: - Intel EtherExpress Pro 10/100 - Kingston - Linksys LNE100TX The best part about the Intel card is that if you ever have to dual-boot the machine with Windows *anything*, there's already a functional driver on the Windows CD. This applies to 98, 98SE, ME, and 2K in my experience; haven't seen XP yet. Kingston beat out Linksys by a nosehair, and this is only due to the fact that Linksys just changed chips a few months ago (about a year?). Both used to work with the generic tulip driver, but now the Linksys uses a Bridgecom transciever, which makes things a little different. SuSE handles both cards beautifully. Each will need drivers-on-floppies if you ever have to use Windows. I've never been a 3com fan; too much money for the same performance as Intel for all practical intents and purposes. SMC and D-Link make good products, I hear, but I've never dealt with them. Netgear never impressed me; Linksys was the same price, and they'd already proven themselves in my book. ===== -- -=|JP|=- Hit me! - http://www.xanga.com/cowboydren/ Jon Pennington | Debian 2.3 -o) cowboydren @ yahoo . com | Auto Enthusiast /\\ Kansas City, MO, USA | ICQ UIN 69 67 29 31 _\_V __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
