Hi all, and sorry if this is too basic a question, but I am really struggling (my eyes hurt!!) Can I take a old XF86Config-4 for my machine (Mandrake's and working pefectly) and put it as the XF86Config-4 for my Suse 8.2 pro? Actually I would only need to substitute the monitor part. Would that be possible? Thanks very much, Sergio Dominguez

If the monitor settings, size, frequency etc are same I don't see why not. But using the Suse tools, yast2 or sax2, isn't complicated. If the monitor is not seen all thats needed is to select the correct H.freq and V.freq, take about 2 minutes to complete. -- del suse-linux-e

Well, I have never had trouble with Xconfig (using Suse since 6.0 Yast and XF86config before and now Yast2 and Sax2 always managed to configure everything fine for me) but it must definitely be something different than just the frequency ranges, as correcting them would make no difference (I tried with lots of different setups) Actually when starting the X as root the screen would be different than as plain user. I put the XF86config generated by Mandrake and now everything is fine. however the fonts did look much better with mandrake, may this be due to the fact that mandrake uses a font server independent of the X server to render fonts? Does Suse also do this? I know that I installed the 100 dpi fonts, how can I do it to use them instead of the 75 dpi which comes by default? Thanks, Sergio Dominguez

Correct me if I'm wrong, but font servers don't render fonts they simply serve them. Perhaps you should check that anit-aliasing is turned on. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen
Perhaps you should check that anit-aliasing is turned on. -- It is indeed. I really do not know what is going on. Today when I came back it looked wrong again, even with the same XF86Config.
I have been trying to find a right configuration with SAX2 (Setting the frequencies as the manual of the monitor says), SAX2 crashing all the time. but it does make no difference. It is not a problem of aliasing it is like certain vertical columns of the screen are brightless than others... Has anyone had this problems? Sergio

I forgot what vid chipset you said you were useing. This sounds like things I've seen on some laptops when you over drive the dot clock - back in the days when you had to mess with this stuff. But since Xfree 4.3 this is seldom necessary. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen
mmmmmmmm, never heard of over driving the dot clock... This are my monitor and device parts of the XF86Config, the vid chipset is a ATI Rage 128, and as I said works fine under other distributions. I'm using this chip and it's running fine in 8.2, if you would like me to mail a copy of my /etc/XF86Config file to you outside of list so that you can check it out you're welcome, just let me know. you should also check all the path variables in the file also to be sure they are valid on the suse box. mandrake may have different font paths, etc. -- trey
