[opensuse] how to change desktop backround in kde4?
Hello: Opensuse 11.1 with kde 4.2 latest update from factory repo. I can't find in kde control center how to change the desktop backround color/image. Any hints? Thanks, Istvan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

This is strange, there is no right-click menu on my desktop. If I click the right mouse button nothing occurs. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thank you, I rebooted the computer and now it looks and works fine. Probably I forgot to logout from kde after the update. Thanks again. Istvan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Is it just me, or am I really seeing "I re-booted the computer, and it works now" more and more on this list? It used to be that a reboot was only necessary with a kernel upgrade. Is this an example of convergent evolution of operating systems? ;) Bob -- Registered Linux User #463880 FSFE Member #1300 GPG-FP: A6C1 457C 6DBA B13E 5524 F703 D12A FB79 926B 994E openSUSE 11.1, Kernel 2.6.27.7-9-default, KDE 3.5.10 Intel Core2 Quad Q9400 2.66GHz, 4GB DDR RAM, nVidia GeForce 9200GS -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Well, I have rebooted since I had to fix boot loader as well. Maybe a simple kde logout/login could have done it. But my experience is that not only kernel-update requires rebooting. I have to reboot sometimes when an optical drive stucks, or if I add a provider to my ADSL/modem list only a reboot will result in a working configuration of the new provider. Maybe. It seems to be a solution that works for some. I don't think twice about rebooting my laptop. For my desktop and VPS, I generally search for a non-reboot solution.
It used to be that a reboot was only necessary with a kernel upgrade.
That's still true. A reboot is not *necessary* for most issues that it can address.[1] There's also quite a few issues that a reboot won't fix.

Not really. Rebooting has always worked just as well on Linux as it has on MS Windows. (Which means it really only solves transient errors anyway.) -- Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. ,= ,-_-. =. bss@iguanasuicide.net ((_/)o o(\_)) ICQ: 514984 YM/AIM: DaTwinkDaddy `-'(. .)`-' http://iguanasuicide.net/ \_/

It's an artefact of having used the "plain desktop" (no Plasma cashew) desktop type in KDE 4.1. That writes a line "plugin=plaindesktop" to ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma-appletsrc. Plasma in 4.2 then can't find this plugin, which is the thing responsible the context menu. This also prevents the widget handles used to move/resize/configure widgets on the desktop from appearing. You can fix this by quitting plasma, by logging out (or kquitapp plasma), change that line to "plugin=desktop" and logging back in or restarting plasma. We'll port plaindesktop to KDE 4.2 in due course. Will -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
