Re: [SLE] Fwd: [oclug] Linux Destined to Fall by the Wayside
Right enough here, Jerry,
I know I've just had an extended moan about browsers, but Netscape has topped itself this week by crashing every time I tried to show the value of various forms of *nix to the interested but wary.
Well, in my view Netscape should be allowed to die a death, it is probably beyond repair by now and it is just far too unstable. We shouldnt get too romantic about it, Netscape came from a similar mindset to that of Microsoft's until recently ! netscape is not an example of open-source development. Although it used to be quite a nice little program before it added all the garbage in like inbuilt mailer and web editor for god's sake.. I hope Konqueror succeeds, and other browsers. I don;t find Konqueror usable yet but I am sure it will be very soon. Yes, it is embarrassing to try and demonstrate web browsing - love it or hate it, Explorer is a flagship product by which others will be judged. That is just reality. It is not up to me of course but if I was a Big Noise at KDE I would concentrate all efforts on 4 things, in this order: Kmail Konqueror Kword K..whatever it is called (spreadsheet)... the rest can wait.. I agree that Netscape is not a perfect piece of software, but where would Linux be if Netscape wouldn't have been available at all? I guess that a lot of today's Linux users would not be around if it wouldn't have been there. A lot of garbage software is shipped out with most of the Linux distributions and Netscape is definitely not among the worst. I couldn't use the Netscape package shipped with SuSE 6.4 and 7.0, I don't know if SuSE or Netscape is to blame for that. With Caldera 2.4's Netscape in SuSE 6.4, and Mandrake 7.2's in SuSE 7.0 it's worked as well as any other application I use. There's nothing wrong with Messenger for those using only one e-mail account, and for people who don't know much about HTML; Composer is a good alternative. Is it possible that Caldera and Mandrake are doing a better job adjusting and/or integrating Netscape into their distribution than SuSE is? IMO the only thing Internet Explorer does better than Netscape or Konqueror is saving complete web pages in one go, with graphics and all, AFAIK there's no such alternative in Linux. On my home box IE in Win98 is a lot slower than Netscape or Konqueror in Linux. I just installed Netscape 6 from the linux Magazine CD, it was the first time it installed flawlessly and in the first test browsing it was fast and effective. But I have to chew a little more on it to see what it's worth. Cheers, ei

I'd just like to say that my experience has been the opposite. In Caldera 2.4 I have frequent problems with Netscape locking up and/or closing all instances when I only wanted to close 1 instance. In SuSE 7, Netscape works great. Almost NEVER a problem. In both cases I am using the Netscape that came with the distro. *************************************************** Powered by SuSE Linux 7.0 Professional KMail 1.0.29.2 Bryan S. If we look at all the different kinds of problems/no problems people are having or not having with Netscape one might assume that it in itself is very *hardware sensitive*!!?...:-} ei -- @~~ EagleIce ~ gnu4u@linux.nu ~~@ @~~ Running GNU/Linux & KDE ~~@

In Netscape, print a web page "to file". You may use ps2pdf to change the .ps file into a .pdf. Works beautifully. SH

The koffice applications would like to get assistance from people developing filters from MS to the koffice XML format. Any one on the list that can provide a hand (see http://www.koffice.org/filters)? -- Richard Bos For those who have no (/)home the journey is endless
