[opensuse] Query Repository for Package information
Hi Is there a tool on OpenSuse 10.2 where I can query packages from the Software repositories? something similar to rpm -qipl <package name> in Yast UN-INSTALLED packages don't show the file list (Don't know who decided to hide the files list if its not installed). I just need to see the paths to package files before I install them. This is useful when I want to verify the package is the same as I think it is. cheers, Jeffery -- Powered by openSUSE 10.2 (i586) Kernel: 2.6.18.2-34-default KDE: 3.5.5 "release 45" 6:26pm up 1 day 19:49, 4 users, load average: 0.40, 0.48, 0.47

The manpages are your friend. FTP/HTTP OPTIONS rpm can act as an FTP and/or HTTP client so that packages can be queried or installed from the internet. Package files for install, upgrade, and query operations may be specified as an ftp or http style URL: ftp://USER:PASSWORD@HOST:PORT/path/to/package.rpm -- The best way to accelerate a computer running Windows is at 9.81 m/s² -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You wish to query a package on a repository. I am not sure what else you wish, because the part I didn't quote wasn't all that clear. If you know where the package is in the repository, use rpm. If not, then Yast should show all the information there is from a package query, including the file list. Uninstalling a package doesn't remove it from the repository. If it doesn't, then try refreshing that repository in the installation sources manager. -- The best way to accelerate a computer running Windows is at 9.81 m/s² -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Forget all that stuff -- I just remembered that Yast2 hasn't ever given a list of the actual files in a package that I recall. Yast 1 did that, but it joined the dodo and the dinosaur quite awhile ago. -- The best way to accelerate a computer running Windows is at 9.81 m/s² -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I don't know about Yast1 or Yast2's history as I am knew to suse. If it existed in previous versions.... hope somone over here knows why it was taken out of current versions. If the RPM is not available (actually downloaded into your machine, though not necessarily installed) then the file list is not available. So, getting a list of the files in an RPM would require first downloading all RPMS. Nit an efficient solution. I would suggest looking at places like http://rpm.pbone.net It will let you find RPMs, many of which you will see are the ones you are interested in. The nice thing is that this site will also list the files in the RPMs. Not as direct, but it can get you where you want.

The way Debian, Ubuntu, etc. do it is to allow repositories to supply a file listing all packages' contents. Does the SuSE package management system not do the same? Who can really say? SUSE have brought in so many package managers (or at least support for so many repository formats) that us mere mortals do not know. The old fashioned YasT package manager has never supported this. I also use smart with rpm-md repositories and I do not see the file contents of packages that are not installed. Perhaps it is a smart thing.

just clarifying a bit here... not a public repository but a YAST sources list.. you know when you setup different sources on your system. The ability to query these package sources either via command line or gui for the package files. I would think the details would be in the meta data which gets downloaded as I can do the same on other RPM based distros.
then Yast should show all the information there is from a package query, including the file list.
Thats what I am after.. but apparently it doesn't show you the file list if its not installed. Same goes with changelog info. Now why would someone suppress the changelog as well? Wouldn't people look at the changelog and decided if they want to upgrade a package ? cheers, Jeffery -- Powered by openSUSE 10.2 (i586) Kernel: 2.6.18.2-34-xen KDE: 3.5.5 "release 45" 9:40pm up 0:21, 3 users, load average: 0.10, 0.20, 0.18
