[SLE] Why is gftp 200 times faster than xftp?
I just finished downloading all of 6.4 via ftp. It actually took me longer fooling around with various ftp programs than it did to download the distribution :( In the process of this I found that xftp ran consistently around 15k/s while gftp ran at 300-500k/s. Does anyone know why this is? I guess the advent of cable modems is showing the limitations of older programs. Even gftp crashed several times with segmentation faults. I was only trying ftp programs that could recurse thru directories. Are there any ftp programs out there which can recurse thru directories and handle symbolic links within the same directory structure? I wonder because the "full-names" directory caused me some problems, where gftp tried to download the same files twice. I use them bothe and do not see any speed differences or seg faults. The only problem I have is that Xftp (the one I prefer) sometimes has trouble making a connection to certain sites. Thats when I'll break out gftp. Do you use a proxy server? Maybe unkowingly? This would be a valid explenation for this speedy download. I am not familiar with your local situation, but 500k/s is extremely fast. I doubt if that would be possible on a regular basis using a cable modem. Koos Pol ---------------------------------------------------------------------- S.C. Hello Koos, No, there was no proxy. Download varied in the 200k/s to 500k/s range with gftp. Our cable technician said that I might be the only person on this cablesystem node, but I doubt it as I've seen download times drop around 8-9pm local time. Several people have said that xftp runs as fast as gftp on their system, but they did not say if they had a 28.8k modem or a faster connection. Rob. Koos Pol wrote:

Ik have no explanation for this. I doubt that the ftp protocol in itself allows for such great discrepencies. I can think of two more (fairly abvious) reasons: 1 - xftp is louzy 2 - gtp decompresses automatically during downloads and counts the decompressed end result as being the amount of bytes downloaded. Other than that I am clueless. Cheers, Koos Pol ---------------------------------------------------------------------- S.C.
