[opensuse] shrinking NTFS partition of Windows Vista: openSUSE 11.0 installer vs. gparted Live CD
Hi all. I have searched the archive of the list with the following question in mind: What should I use to shrink an HPFS/NTFS partition of Windows Vista to make room for openSUSE 11.0 (and keep the computer dualboot)? (There is also a recovery partition (from Windows) which the openSUSE installer seems to list as an "unknown" first partition as /dev/sda1 or so.) - openSUSE 11.0 installer - gparted Live CD - some Windows tools ... Some older posts say one should not prefer the openSUSE installer ... What is the current status? Hardware (if it matters): Sony VAIO VGN-NR21M (Model: PCG-7112M) Greetings Sven -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

first Vista itself (config panel, managing computer, disks, right clic on the disk)
(There is also a recovery partition (from Windows) which the openSUSE installer seems to list as an "unknown" first partition as /dev/sda1 or so.)
burn a dvd and use the partition for an other thing (I used it to 11)
- openSUSE 11.0 installer
worked gracefully for me, allowing me to reclaim 15Gb more from vista than vista didn't want to leave :-)) jdd -- Jean-Daniel Dodin Président du CULTe www.culte.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hello, For that purpose, I use the Linux Boot CD from Paragon hard Disk Manager. It works fine. Michel. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Use the Vista tools to defrag the HD first, then use the Vista Drive manager to shrink the partition to give enough room to your new linux install. I've found that using M$' tools to deal with M$ tends to work much better. When you've finished that, then boot with the install *D and pay attention at the disk partitioning section, to make sure that it uses the unused space _after_ your Windows partition, and leaves the image partition alone. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I installed openSUSE 11 onto an Asus R2Hv UMPC the other day which came pre-installed with Vista. As I wasn't really worried what the outcome was, I decided to let openSUSE do all the modification to the partitions. The machine had a single 80GB drive partitioned as 2x 40GB. OpenSUSE then changed the partition info to (or there abouts): - 25GB Vista - 15GB Vista data - 20GB openSUSE - 2GB swap - 15GB /home The openSUSE installer altered the partition table, recognised Vista and setup GRUB perfectly. After the install I was able to boot into either without any problems or loss of data. I was thoroughly impressed.
