Need advice on using YOU and applying updates.
From: Max webb, AKA The Intermediate Newbie, AKA object of desire for women, AKA pork rind eater etc I wish to use SuSE's Yast Online Update to download the latest patches and update for my SuSE Linux box. I am being cautious about doing this because after downloading the updates and applying them, I encountered a problem with xcdroast no longer functioning. Also, I have read in the forum that others have had problems with YAST modules in the KDE control center after applying KDE 3.xx updates. I realize that the problems that I have encountered are most likely the result of my in experience and lack of knowledge in the post application and configuration phase of the updates. Since I had just installed 8.0, I decided to reinstall the system to "fix" my update related problems. I know this is a primitive solution, but I did not know what to do at that point. I did however execute xcdroast (before I reinstalled) from a terminal emulater as to see any error messages. The resulting error output concerned a GID not being set, several UID's not being set, and a file not found... all in relation to "CD recording backends" like mkisofs, etc, which were updated with Y.O.U. I would appreciate any advice and or tips on successfull applying updates via YOU. Please keep in mind that I am a newbie, although I do know how to use chmod, chown, chgrp etc, on a basic level. Thanks. Max. -- Remember: Always think positively. You will prevail.
In general, YOU is very good. There are occasional problems like the recent problem with XCD-Roast. I think this came about because XCD-Roast uses a library that had a security flaw. When the library was replaced on online update, XCD-Roast could not use it properly. SuSE fixed this is a few days. Several people posted methods for getting XCD-Roast to work until the fix arrived. You may find problems if you try to install packages like the very latest version of KDE that are likely to conflict with existing core packages on your version of SuSE. If you don't know what you're doing with these, either wait for the next version of SuSE or learn how to live with conflicts. Most packages, e.g. the RC2 and RC3 versions of Mozilla 1.0 create no problems with YOU if you install them properly. I've had very few problems with YOU. Yes, I found that XCD-Roast didn't work, but I checked the output when running from a Konsole, looked at this list and correctly guessed that SuSE would fix it very quickly. JDL Max Webb wrote:

From: Max webb, AKA The Intermediate Newbie Thank you for your advice. I do wish to update KDE. If I do update my KDE base files do I then have to reinstall the SuSE extensions package for KDE to avoid "the yast modules not working in control center problem?" Every time that I update do I have to run SuSEconfig? Have you updated KDE 3.0 with the SuSE RPM's? How did it go? Did you have any problems or conflicts? Thanks much for all the great advise in advance. Max On Sunday 02 June 2002 08:52 am, John Lamb wrote:
