[opensuse] scanner that works well with linux - any recommendations?
I bought an HP Scanjet 2400 a while ago, obviously neglecting to check if it worked with Linux - which it doesn't (AFAICT). I would really like to get a new one, but one that works with Linux. The scanjet has two buttons on the front - copy & scan. Those would be really handy to have working too. Any (affordable) recommendations? This canner isn't used a lot, only occasionally. thanks Per -- Per Jessen, Zürich (15.8°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I have this scanner (Cannon LiDE25): https://www.canon.co.uk/For_Home/Product_Finder/Scanners/Flatbed/canonscan_l... and it works out of the box with Linux. I bought it because it's small/compact, and powered off the USB (no external power brick). I didn't have to do anything to get it to work with openSUSE 11.1... just plug it into the USB port and fire up my favorite scanner software. Same holds true for the LiDE 60. And it works fine with Vista, too.

I have an Epson scanner I'm quite satisfied with (don't remember the exact model, it's at home -- I can check and report back later). The Epson scanners only work in Linux via a proprietary driver (provided in RPM format by Epkowa). I've not checked in a while, but as far as I know, they only exist in 32bit version => if your linux is 64bit, you'd have to make do with the GUI provided by the driver (usable, but not great). If you're on a 32bit install, the driver integrates with SANE and Kooka, so it's even better. HTH Cheers. Bye. Ph. This is not correct. Per, I have an Epson RX620 all-in-one printer/scanner that works well, including all the front-panel buttons. It's on a 64-bit system and integrates well with SANE etc. It uses the iscan-free package from the OSS repository and It Just Works. Some Epson scanners need the iscan package from the non-OSS repository. Check out the package descriptions in YaST or some details are somewhere in the archives of this list. And thanks especially to Johannes Meixner for his work and help! :) Cheers, Dave PS I used to have a Canon scanner which worked well but I gave it away when I discovered their approach to Linux. Pity, they make nice cameras as well. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

James, As a previous comment on this thread hinted at, looking at the description for packages "iscan" and "iscan-free" will tell you which Epson scanners require the proprietary driver (and/or firmware). Other models may work with only the "iscan-free" package, but those are not listed (at least, not to my knowledge). I use the "Perfection 3170 Photo", and that model does indeed require both proprietary modules. Once you have them, it works fine though. HTH Cheers. Bye. Ph. A week ago, I tried to find a scanner, too. There is a compatibility list of the sane project [0]. However, it seemed to me that there are no new USB scanners supported. Thus, I bought a used CanoScan LiDE 60 for 40€ (eBay). This one is supported by the genesys backend[1] and easily to install with YaST.

Regarding "receive fax": Of course the device can receive a fax stand-alone. As far as I know HPLIP supports only "PC fax send" but it does not yet support "PC fax receive" i.e. that an incomming fax gets somehow forwarded from the all-in-one device to the PC or that a fax which was received by the all-in-one device can be directly downloaded from there to the PC. When a fax was received by the device, one would have to place the fax-printout on its scanner unit to get it as fax-image into the PC. Compare http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/models/officejet/officejet_5600_series.... --------------------------------------------------------------------- Fax supported means that PC initiated fax send is supported using hp-sendfax, once an appropriate CUPS fax queue is set up. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Kind Regards Johannes Meixner -- SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, Maxfeldstrasse 5, 90409 Nuernberg, Germany AG Nuernberg, HRB 16746, GF: Markus Rex -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Any of the HP All-In-One devices supported by HPLIP work fine. (I've tested thre differen models, 43xx 51xx and one other I forget). Nice thing about these is they come in network connect versions which means they are shareable to multiple stations and do printing fax scanning and copying. For some values of affordable they fit the bill. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
I don't know what you consider affordable, if you get a scanner that's is a "network" scanner -- it can scan directly a system using network protocols, like 'email', or 'smb', or 'ftp'. I don't know at what price point they start offering features like that. But I laid out some bucks for a laser printer recently (my volume is very low -- so low that inkjets die because the ink dries up in them and clogs the output tubes), so...I decided I had to go with something that wouldn't dry out -- like powdered toner. :-). The price of ink's were driving me to insanity, but if you don't use the ink, you lose the printer. Nice marketing ploy, and HP is among the worst. (I got a Dell). Haven't tried printing from linux, but it scans to linux or windows. In fact, it was easier to configure to scan to linux than windows since my linux machine accepts email internally, but my windows machine doesn't. But I can't say it was the most affordable printer I've ever seen -- but it should last without me worrying about the ink for a very long time. Probably just have to worry about dust...(and power spikes...they say not to put them on UPS's... not sure why)... Per Jessen wrote:

I did think about defining 'affordable', but I thought perhaps the comparison with an HP2400 would hint at it :-) I think the HP2400 was about CHF100, a new 2410 is about the same. A network connected scanner would certainly be optimal, but for the kind of casual, occasional use I have for it, I suspect it would be out of the question. Besides, miraculously the HP2400 is now working with the driver from http://www.elcot.in/ ...

I have been using a CanoScan LiDE 20 flatbed scanner (http://software.canon-europe.com/products/0000465.asp) for the past 5 years or so, without any sort of problems, last 1.5 years under Linux (openSUSE 11.1 & Ubuntu 9.04). Windows XP required the scan software mentioned at the link above as a mandatory interface via Adobe Acrobat (ver 6, which is what I mostly use in Windows). In Linux, have used this scanner with Skanlite, Xsane, gscan2pdf without any problems, it having been auto-detected. Performance has also been as good as with the native interface in Windows. An added advantage is that it just needs to be plugged into a USB port (no additional power input needed). A great scanner for general use.
