[opensuse] Error message "Compositing not supported on your system.....etc"
When I first tried KDE4 on oS 11.0 (32-bit) and tried out the fancy desktop effects (like wobbly windows, cubed display) I had no hassles - all worked by simply enabling Effects in the Desktop Configuration. I thought it was all quite cute (but not necessarily cuddly) and went back to the non-frills KDE4 desktop. A few days ago I thought I would try this fancy stuff again, especially with oS 11.1 Beta5. But now, in both oS 11.0 and 11.1 Beta5 all I get is an error message stating: Compositing is not supported on your system. Required X extensions (XComposite and XDamage) are not available. My system (32-bit) hasn't changed so why "suddenly" I cannot use the fancy effects? Another progression in the wild and woolly ride on KDE4.x? (My system/s are upgraded daily.) I've checked the archives for openSUSE - and the kde mail list which I joined today - and cannot see anything to do with this inability to be able to use the 'wobbles' and the 'cubecals' and whateverelse. Just to complete the picture, I am not using a laptop, have an nVidia card with the very latest driver installed which has 3D enabled (just like some months ago when I first tried KDE4 under oS 11.0). Anyone, please, have a simple solution to my hassle? Are you now using the "nv" or "nvidia" driver? It probably will not work with the "nv" driver, no glx. -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

My msg states that I have 3D enabled - so the short answer is that I am using the nvidia driver (and glx) :-) . Ciao. -- Understanding only begins with the act of perception. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

That's all there is to it?! I'll try it out and let you know. (But if there is all to this, then why isn't this part of the KDE4.x configuration 'instructions'? I am starting to believe the observation by one of its developers that (paraphrased) KDE4 doesn't need users for it to work properly.) Haven't yet tried this (above) as I said I would in my earlier message (last night) but- do you remember mentioning that the panel on the righthand side of the taskbar remained visible for a second after the taskbar itself autohid and I said that I didin't have this problem? Well, I now *do* have this 'hassle'. And it is all because I engaged the "composite" "on" in xorg.conf to be able to enable the Desktop Effects. Test this for yourself by setting "composite" to "off". Ciao. -- Once, in the wilds of Afghanistan, I lost my corkscrew and we were forced to live on nothing but food and water for days.
