[opensuse] Linux compatible Photo Printer recommendations

Hello folks, Could somebody please recommend a good Linux compatible photo printer with realistic photo image output and RJ45 network interface. It should preferably have separate per-color ink cartridges. I need it to print high quality photographs on a photo paper. Thanks in advance, Alex -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Does it have to have RJ45? That's going to be a tough one to accomplish. most modern printers are either USB or Ethernet... or both. Generally speaking almost all HP printers work out-of-the-box with most current Linux distros. I've got an HP Photosmart D7260 (6 cartridge inkjet), and it's super easy to use. Does a pretty decent job on the photo prints... but it's Ethernet/USB... no RJ45 anywhere. Hmmm.. having a braindead moment... I read RJ45 and thought RS232... C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

By RJ45 he means ethernet. See http://www.nullmodem.com/RJ-45.htm -- _____________________________________ At one time I had a Real Sig. Its been downsized. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

HP printers have excellent Linux support compared to other manufacturers. See here for more information: http://hplip.sourceforge.net Personally I use an HP Photosmart C8180 AIO - It's USB & Wireless (b/g) and works really well under Linux. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I also recommend HP printers, although one should look at the linux printer driver site to verify the printer's features that are supported by the driver, sometimes not all of them are. I would look at HP's shopping site for the features you need, and then use the OpenPrinting site: http://www.openprinting.org/printers Your ref to an RJ45 implies you want an independent network printer (?) - if so . . . our LAN printer uses JetDirect, which is excellent (but of course adds cost). -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

See http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/supported_devices/index.html In general see http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Purchasing_a_Printer_and_Compatibility ------------------------------------------------------------------- It is crucial to have exact model names because small differences in model names can make big differences regarding support status. Some examples (for details see "Supported printers" at http://hplipopensource.com): * The HP LaserJet 1018 is only supported by HPLIP since version 2.7.10 and requires a proprietary binary-only driver plug-in which must be downloaded from HP. In contrast the HP LaserJet 1015 is a PCL printer which is supported since a long time by HPLIP and probably also by several Ghostscript drivers for PCL printers. * The HP Color LaserJet 2600 is only supported by HPLIP since version 3.9.2 and requires a proprietary binary-only driver plug-in which must be downloaded from HP. In contrast the HP Color LaserJet 2605 is a PostScript printer which does not require HPLIP or any other driver. -------------------------------------------------------------------
Your ref to an RJ45 implies you want an independent network printer (?) - if so . . . our LAN printer uses JetDirect, which is excellent (but of course adds cost).
The crucial point is that HP's JetDirect does not only forward plain data to a printer but also "knows" how to do the right SNMP stuff for HP printers so that HP's HPLIP software can do additional features like device status, scanning, sending faxes even when the device is not connected via USB but via network. Usually only HP printers with an original HP built-in network interface can have full support by the HPLIP software (provided the model is supported by HPLIP at all). Third-party printserver boxes usually support only simple unidirectional data transfer from the PC to the printer. Therefore plain printing usually works - but even for plain printing there is no guarantee, see for example https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=217215 Usually nothing else (e.g. device status, scanning, sending faxes) works with non-HP printserver boxes. Best network support can be expected when there is a HP built-in network card which matches exactly to the model i.e. when HP offers the model with a built-in network card out-of-the-box and when the technical data sheet of HP claims network support for Unix-like operating systems. See http://hplipopensource.com/node/287 --------------------------------------------------------------- HP Linux imaging and printing What network print servers are supported? Answer: Currently we have only tested HP JetDirect devices with HPLIP. No other network print servers are supported. --------------------------------------------------------------- Also have a look at my older mail http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2008-09/msg00090.html (still true but some links therein are meanwile outdated) Kind Regards Johannes Meixner -- SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, Maxfeldstrasse 5, 90409 Nuernberg, Germany AG Nuernberg, HRB 16746, GF: Markus Rex -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi, Maybe too late, but a few days ago I installed a Brother MFC-5890CN. It's a "multifunctional". The printer-setup was straightforward, following the support site. I didn't test remote scanning though, and print-to-fax and ... Scan to email is OK. Print quality is the same as my HP Photosmart 7100 series printer at home. And it can do A3 ! I had it for about 120€. And it has four ink-cartridges. -- Met vriendelijke groeten, Koenraad Lelong -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
