To change for all users at the same time, edit /etc/profile.local To change for a single user, edit /home/<username>/.bashrc
Hi Anders,
Most kind of you to reply..../etc/profile.local does not exist on my system....I will just create it.
Thanks
Johan

Actually, the file you want is /etc/profile, not profile.local. I suspect that may be why /etc/profile.local doesn't exist.

Actually, it's not. /etc/profile quite clearly states # PLEASE DO NOT CHANGE /etc/profile. There are chances that your changes # will be lost during system upgrades. Instead use /etc/profile.local for # your local settings, favourite global aliases, VISUAL and EDITOR # variables, etc ... The reason it doesn't exist is that it is explicitly intended for local admins to use. If the local admin doesn't create it, it doesn't exist.

No, he wants /etc/profile.local. The '.local' files will be read after the original files and you have a way to return to original setup if something is abnormal or whatever. Quite a few of the configuration files are that way (.local) now. An /etc/profile.local did not exist because it needs to be created. re (1st para in /etc/profile): # /etc/profile for SuSE Linux # # PLEASE DO NOT CHANGE /etc/profile. There are chances that your changes # will be lost during system upgrades. Instead use /etc/profile.local for # your local settings, favourite global aliases, VISUAL and EDITOR # variables, etc ... -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711
<< snip >> Hi, I would like to thank all those of you who took the time to respond for a second round on this matter. It was again a informative round. My problem is solved and I did get some insights into workings of linux...thanks to members on this and other list.
