My guess and suggestion. Down load a Live bootable CD and give it a try - "Knoppix". It may be your MB IDE controller or the hard drive. Once the CD is up try to fsck the drive. Remember, you will need to fsck it with the file system type. Also, once booted try "fdisk /dev/sd[abc or d]"
Sounds like a good idea. I can't download anything at home, obviously, but I do have a Quantian dvd, which I believe is based on knoppix. I'll give that a try. I don't think it's just the IDE interface, though. When I gave the brokenmodules command, it loaded two more new modules before hanging on the pata module. it seems to me the via82cxxx hardware is broken, and the other two modules didn't depend on it, but the pata module did.
