Please use one of the mirrors. If you would like to give donations so that the FTP server has more bandwidth then it does now then do so..otherwise be quiet. These are rough times and you have no idea how much these co-lo companies charge business's to host machines. It's rape. * John McNulty (john@jmtl.com) [011030 12:38]: -> -> ->That happens when the mouse that turns the wheel, that powers their ftp ->server gets tired .. which is does a lot ;-) -> -> ->On Tuesday 30 October 2001 9:01 pm, Bob B wrote: ->> Hello to all ->> I been trying since yesterday to use yast2 for the online update and i ->> been getting bad server respone does anyone know why this might be ->> happening or have been having this same trouble i am running suse 7.1 ->> thanks for any info! ->> i am trying to connect to ftp.suse.com ->> BOB -> ->-- ->To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com ->For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com ->Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq and the ->archives at http://lists.suse.com -> -----=====-----=====-----=====-----=====----- Ben Rosenberg mailto:ben@whack.org -----=====-----=====-----=====-----=====----- "Technological progress is like an axe in the hands of a pathological criminal" -AE
Ben, I think your response is a little harsh - Bob just asked a simple question. It's very possible that there could have been a problem with the suse.com ftp server and that it had nothing to do with an overload. It should also be noted that SuSE burdens at least a little bit of the problem for defaulting the update automatically to ftp.suse.com. There are plenty of ways a better guess could be made as to the right mirror for a user. If SuSE is going to shove everyone to their site by default then questions like this are bound to come up over and over again. Sorry, I didn't mean to be a dick. It's just that I get a little cranky when people make stupid jokes about things that can't be helped. It's why there are mirror sites. I just get sick of the typical enduser complaining over and over again. My comment wasn't directed at Bob..it was directed at the mouse comment. I could see if there were no mirrors but there are mirrors..no matter what the default is. I mean I watched people go off on SuSE's sendmail rpm when I know for a fact it works. I use them on 7.1 at home..on my workstation at work with 7.2 and we have several 7.3 test boxes in our lab that are doing mail using their RPM's...and they all work. It's a configuration matter and the fact that people don't know how to configure it ..they want to depend on some all knowing all seeing SuSE config for every situation and that's just not how it is. I know for a fact that Sendmail themselves work closely with SuSE because I know a lot of the Sr. developers at Sendmail and they say SuSE is really on top of things and have some of the best developers that they have worked with. It seems that people would rather bitch then to see what the issue is with things these days and I just don't have any patience for people who whine that haven't bothered to look into things or that don't know what they are doing and blame the software...or hardware for that matter. I am sorry that I was jerk..but if one doesn't have something constructive to say then they should shutup and stop wasting bandwidth on silly crap like mouse jokes. * John W Higgins (john@wishdev.com) [011030 13:18]: ->Ben, -> ->I think your response is a little harsh - Bob just asked a simple question. ->It's very possible that there could have been a problem with the suse.com ->ftp server and that it had nothing to do with an overload. -> ->It should also be noted that SuSE burdens at least a little bit of the ->problem for defaulting the update automatically to ftp.suse.com. Ben, chill out. I put a 'wink' at the end of the sentence to make it VERY clear that I was having a bit of fun !

If you can't take a joke, then don't get nasty, go for a walk until you cool off and then ignore it !!! This is not Ben Rosenberg's forum .. other people have right to expression, so show some consideration. And BTW, you've wasted several times my bandwidth defending your position!
On suse 7.3 my server at work defaults to something besides ftp.suse.com. im not at work to give you the mirror site but its not suse.com for sure. jack

The server could be busy for some reason. Try using a mirror; check the SuSE
Web site for one closest to you. Also, you may want to try using Manual
Update->Expert and just select a few patches at a time.
