[suse-xfree86] Blank screen w/GEForce FX 5200 AGP
SuSE 9.0 AMD ?? Soyo ?? 17 inch LCD GeForce FX 5200 AGP A friend's tnt video card fried (fan) and we replaced it with a 128M GeForce FX 5200 AGP. Ran the nvidia updater (5336), followed directions (root) sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.run sax2 -m 0=nvidia text screen changed to X and blank screen (black). edited /etc/X11/XF86Config, nvidia changed to nv init 5 -> blank screen (black) Ran nvidia updater (4496) with same results. note: With the previous tnt card, the 5336 ver would not work (blank screen) but the 4496 would (w/o 3d, nv not nvidia driver). Changed driver to nv (SuSE original). Same blank screen in X. I know not where to turn. Suggestions welcome, please. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711

There should be a FAQ about this. You shouldn't have needed sax2. I just ran the nvidia script, changed /etc/X11/XF86Config from "nv" to "nvidia" and it's OK, same card used in SuSE 9.0 and Mandrake 9.2 boxes with the 5336 driver. I once messed up for "nvidia" by using an app that was used to configure the card on the fly, "nv" was unaffected. Check /var/log/XFree86.0.log to see if there are any pointers as to what is wrong. It seems to be hardware dependant, I've two boxes with two Nvidia based boards : - the first one is a MSI GeForce4 MX440, if I want to get TV-out I've to connect the primary screen on DVI - the second one is a MSI GeForce FX5900, if I want to get TV-out I've to connect the primary screen on VGA !! Don't know why! Michel

Try booting into init 3 and moving /etc/XF86Config to /etc/XF86Config.bak. Reinstall the 5336 version and then run sax2 -m 0=nvidia. Just to be sure, I just ran through those steps on my own system and it provided a working system. -- Louis D. Richards LDR Interactive Technologies

Failed as before

The monitor is a Samsung 17 LCD Round-a-bout, back-door, off-the-wall, mostly solved: Booted the 2004-02-16-EN knoppix and copied the XF86Config from knoppix to /etc/X11/... Rebooted into SuSE level 5 successfully with the nv driver. Did not try 'switch2nvidia' (time constraints). There is no 3D but the user does not play gaims. He does watch videos. He is happy but I am not. I believe that Yast2 should have been able to correctly configure the GeForce 5200 card with the Samsung LCD. I was tempted to reinstall from disk the video system, but ... 'sax2' and 'sax2 -m 0=nvidia' with and without an XF86Config present both present a *black* screen, usually fatal. GOOD NEWS: A 95% convert from windoz. He is using kde and finds his way around pretty good. He had some problems understanding 'mount' and the need to leave the device before 'umount'. He feels his computing is much more responsive (athlon 1800 512Mb) with linux than xp, and much safer. AND he is talking to his neighbors and friends. I may have made myself a full-time second job (unpaid). First job is spending my social security check buying premium $2/gal gas for my Harley <grin>. He does want to buy the 9.1 issue for me to install. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711

I'm glad you got it going. I'm also glad to see another computer enthusiast and linux user that rides. When I'm not working on the network, I'm riding a 97 Ultra. The screen resolution is always perfect on it ;-) -- Louis D. Richards LDR Interactive Technologies

Is the monitor recognized? My little bit of experience with LCD monitors are they will give a black screen if they can not handle the resolution/freqs given. On mine, I added the info to the Monitors database used by sax to have it work much more reliably. -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: http://www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871 God said, I AM that I AM. Joe, I do not have local access but will check asap. I wonder, though. Before replacing the TNT video card (blew up, cooling fan), it worked, but would not work after. Tried without running sax2, then just running sax2, then updating nvidia drivers. All with the *black* screen. ??? tks, -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711
