I'm using an Alcatel Speedtouch USB modem to access Freeserve broadband. Everything works fine except that every four or five days it crashes my system (SuSE 8.0). For no apparent reason the caps lock and scroll lock lights start flashing and the whole system locks up completely. Worse, the system is very vulnerable to these crashes on first activating the modem. Sometimes it takes three or four crashes and reboots to get the modem connecting. Once it's up and running then it goes for several days "always on". I should point out that I have to manually "modprobe -k speedtouch" and run /usr/sbin/speedmgmt. The drivers are not loaded automatically for some reason. Has anyone else had this problem? The disruption these crashes causes is very inconvenient. Anyone got any ideas how I can prevent them? - Ken

Strange, no problems here.

Have the same problem but 'solved' it by doing the modprobe in boot.local and putting a speedmgmt icon on my desktop (portable, not always connected).

How did you install it? I used the SuSE guidelines and have no problems: From: SuSE SDB Webinterface [sdb@suse.de] Sent: donderdag 20 juni 2002 22:53 To: jacobs.marc@army.mil.be Subject: Ihr angeforderter SuSE sdb Artikel configSpeedTouch If this article didn't help you, you are welcome to write an e-mail including your registration code to support@suse.de if your question is in the scope of the SuSE Linux installation support. You can also create a support request online: http://support.suse.de/en/services/query-onlineform.html Title: Setting up Alcatel SpeedTouch USB DSL Modem http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/configSpeedTouch.html _______________________________________________________ Applies to SuSE Linux: Version 8.0 Situation You want to set up your DSL access with the SpeedTouch USB DSL modem under SuSE Linux. Procedure First, you need the management software of Alcatel that can be found at http://www.alcateldsl.com/. To install the management software, proceed as described below: 1. Log in as user 'root'. 2. Unpack the management software with the command: tar -xvzf speedmgmt.tar.gz 3. Change to the new directory "mgmt" by entering: cd mgmt. 4. Enter the following commands in this order to compile and install the the software: make make install Please make sure that the packages make, gcc and glibc-devel are installed. Now you have to change a line in the start script. To do so, open the file /etc/hotplug/usb/speedtouch with an editor and change the line modprobe -k speedtch to modprobe -k speedtouch Restart the hotplug service with the command "rchotplug restart". Start YaST2 and open the module Network/Basic -> DSL Configuration. You will be asked if T-Online is your provider, answer 'No'. In the next dialog, enter user name, password, VPI/VCI numbers (e.g., 0.38 for British Telecom), and switch the 'PPP mode' to 'PPP over ATM'. You can get the VPI/VCI numbers with the Windows Alcatel Tool or by asking your provider. -- Marc Jacobs

I read this a couple of days ago. I don't know if it is of help: http://www.btofaq.net/articles/frog/current.html JDL
To Marc Jacobs - I installed the modem following the SuSE instructions. I use Kinternet to connect. When it works, it works great - so perhaps it's a hardware problem. (See below) To John Lamb - I read the article you suggested. It does mention that there have been some problems reported with high-end graphics cards and AMD processors. I have an AMD Athlon and a Nvidia GeForce 3. So perhaps it's that. To both of you - Thanks for taking an interest in my problem. Your help is much appreciated. Best wishes - Ken
Hello All : Thanks to everyone who helped me with my installation. I finally got it to work! I decided to (perhaps foolishly) delete the source directory on my Windows partition. I later wanted to update my installed system, but YaST2 will not change the source (it says it can't mount the source). This would not be that hard to figure out, except that I'm trying to have it change to a FTP server that has the entire suse directory. Any help on how I can get this done? I want YaST to install from FTP. Thanks a lot, Burhan

That is a commom bug with a harddisk-install. The few people, who knows the answer, keeps it secret. I have installed apt4rpm, to update my system. mvh... Morten Christensen
