hey, a while back I was playing with 2.4 kernels and upgraded modutils on my 7.0 box, for one reason or another, i need to stay with kernel 2.2.16.....now i find certain dri modules won't load when X starts because x can't find the modprobe command? can i revert back to the original 7.0 modutils package? how? TIA, don ------------------------------------ proud Linux user since kernel 1.1.54 icq#42235604

I think that you can find the entire 7.0 distribution on the SuSE website. I believe that modutils is in either series "a" or series "aaa_base". Or you can find it in full-names.
i've got the cds, but how to go about removing the 2.4 package, if i do "rpm -e modutils" i get error message stating that dependencies will be broken, will they be okay if i use --force? and then re-install the old rpm?

I'm no expert on this, but I'd guess that "rpm -Uhv modutils-rpm --force" would work (where modutils-rpm is replaced by the actual file location). Paul

thanks for the inspiration Paul, I decided to go for it, (this isn't a mission-critical box anyway :), fired up yast and installed modules.rpm ......the r128 module loads now.....i had just installed XFree86-4.03, now i have a new problem - xawtv no longer works, error says it can't find /dev/video, i tried it as root thinking it may be a permission problem, but didn't work that way either.... so i ran MAKEDEV.v4l again and re-tried, still no go.... files look like this: root@eischeid:/dev > ls -l /dev/video lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 11 May 29 23:08 /dev/video -> /dev/video0 root@eischeid:/dev > ls -l /dev/video0 crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 81, 0 May 29 23:08 /dev/video0 any ideas? also kv4lsetup and kwintv fail..... -- proud Linux user since kernel 1.1.54 icq#42235604

As I had the same problem with my AIW32 card I am assuming that you are using an ATI graphics card. If so you might find it useful to check their mailing lists livid-ati@linuxvideo.org and livid-gatos@linuxvideo.org. By using the new binaries that have been posted on http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=12629 I was able to get my xawtv program going and solve the /dev/video problem. I hope this helps. Obviously, if I am barking up the wrong tree just ignore this message. Eddie
hey eddie, yes, of course you were right, sorry it took so long for me to reply......i had to re-educate myself about the ATI AIW boards... i had got everything working back when i built the box in early Jan. and i remembered the ati_xv drivers had to be copied over the XFree86 drivers, it just took me a while to find the right package again. It seems like, ( if i read the LiVid mailing list posts correctly ), that the XV drivers are a kind of "wrapper" answering calls to the v4l devices....so there really is no v4l devices with the ATI boards?? xawtv is compiled with xv_enable and works but any program which needs /dev/video fails with "can't find device"...... i GUESS programs such as Broadcast2000 don't use xv and that is why it fails to find /dev/video....just my hypothesis ;) thanks again, -don Eddie Howson wrote:

You might try: rpm -Uhv devs --force On my system at least the /dev/video file belongs to the package "devs". Of course that might lead to utter paralysis. Dunno. Paul
