[opensuse] Attempting to move back to Opensuse
Hello: I have used Opensuse for about 4 or 5 years, even buying the box sets. About 6 years ago I switched to Kunbuntu for some reason now unknown to me. I have also tested and played around with other distros with a rolling release model. I have heard a lot of good things about Opensuse recently and would like to shift back, but I have lost all my knowledge of Opensuse and its workings. What I need to know is: 1.) How do I get full multimedia support and not break the distro? 2.) How stable is the Opensuse rolling release system? I would like to keep the KDE desktop up to date on monthly cycle of updates. Most other updates could wait for the normal upgrade cycle. How would I implement this feature? 3.) Does Opensuse allow for Distribution upgrades from the upgrade utility or will I have to install from a cd or dvd? My reason for asking this lame questions is to get me up and running without breaking my system during the install customization phase and then seeing me get frustrated to the point of whipping out the install and going back to Kubuntu. Hello:
I have used Opensuse for about 4 or 5 years, even buying the box sets. About 6 years ago I switched to Kunbuntu for some reason now unknown to me. I have also tested and played around with other distros with a rolling release model. I have heard a lot of good things about Opensuse recently and would like to shift back, but I have lost all my knowledge of Opensuse and its workings. What I need to know is:
1.) How do I get full multimedia support and not break the distro?
See http://opensuse-community.org/Main_Page
2.) How stable is the Opensuse rolling release system? I would like to keep the KDE desktop up to date on monthly cycle of updates. Most other updates could wait for the normal upgrade cycle. How would I implement this feature?
I use recent stable KDE without any problem, see http://en.opensuse.org/KDE_repositories#Upstream_release_aka._KR411_.28KDE_S...
3.) Does Opensuse allow for Distribution upgrades from the upgrade utility or will I have to install from a cd or dvd?
I use command line way, no problem here, see http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:System_upgrade#Command_line
My reason for asking this lame questions is to get me up and running without breaking my system during the install customization phase and then seeing me get frustrated to the point of whipping out the install and going back to Kubuntu.
I was also using Kubuntu for some time. I moved content of home folder from one distro to another and all applications were working as I was used to. :-)
Thanks for your help and comments

go to repository setup in YaST, community, choose "packman" and "libdvdcss" (I was said it's no from vlc, but I didn't check)
2.) How stable is the Opensuse rolling release system?
look for tumbleweed http://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Tumbleweed butusually tumbleweed stay still some time when a new release is due. You stil have to upgrade
3.) Does Opensuse allow for Distribution upgrades from the upgrade utility or will I have to install from a cd or dvd?
upgrade should be as simple as chaging the repos for the new release and doing "zypper dup", and is officially supported from one distro to the next one, but this heavily depends of what you install (only the basic distro is supported) and of the new things to come the 13.1 is due next week, so better install firts this (promising) one :-) jdd -- http://www.dodin.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I use Tumbleweed (amounts to a rolling release) on a production system and have virtually no problems. Very satisfied. Started with 11.2 and about to become 13.1.
