Re: [SLE] Price Hike Question & "Bring the Upgrade to the Stores Petition"

Not just you guys, Linux in general has just gone up in price in the last year or so. RedHat is the worst offender, I just didn't expect all of the Linux distros to follow RH's example like they have. As long as it stops at the current level, I'll keep buying it.
That's why we have the Update Edition, where you pay $30 (+-15, haven't seen the US price list yet) and get 6 CDs, 1 DVD, the update manual, and some support for, a fari offer, I'd say. The Prof.Edition. includes more (printed) manuals and much more support, so this also comes for a fair price. We did NOT raise the prices and you get the same as before. The same costs the same, you now get it as the Update Edition (a little different: a smaller manual, update maual, in printed form, but on the other hand now the DVD is included). The Prof.Edition not just costs more, it really IS more. Now yo've a lot more choice! Before, you always had to get the one box we offered, now you've the choice to get what you actually need (which is probably the update edition). -- Michael Hasenstein http://www.suse.de/~mha/ SuSE Linux AG, Nuernberg (Germany) SuSE Inc., Oakland, California (US) -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq
OK I may have mentioned some of this before, but I will post again...SuSE is good value for money. I will make a couple of points. 1) My LUG has been supplied with free boxed sets by SuSE UK.......they are eagerly awaited and really do the rounds. Despite the fact that everyone has access to a FREE installation of the best distro around......many of the members buy a boxed set as well. They recognise the value of the distribution, and want to have their on copies to hand. Our LUG has changed from predominately Mandrake to predominately SuSE. Despite having to explain to the wife why 2 copies of the same software arrive at the house within a few days...I always buy a boxed set for myself as well....In fact I have just taken out a subscription for the upgrades. I would spend more on 1 nite out.... only with SuSE I get months of fun and mental stimulation.( I also use it as a work tool....not just as a passtime). 2) I am in business...and have found that being the cheapest is not always the best. Don't get me wrong.....I like a bargin.....but SuSE does a lot of development and is associated with many market leaders. I think they have also been putting a lot of effort into promoting an image more suited to a market leader. People expect to pay a proper price for support and service, and there have been no increases for a long time....yet the product has moved on. I have had people thank me for the reintroduction to SuSE. There are so many distros around now......the winners are either going to have to give the best support or aim towards a particular niche market. Don't get me wrong.....I am not advocating a blank cheque here.......but we al have to be realistic. Michael, It is all great pricing if you live in Germany or the USA but here in Australia it is another matter. I'm not complaining about the pricing of your products but how you are marketing the Upgrade Products. As SuSE are not allowing retailers to carry the upgrade product, regardless of what you say we cannot buy the product here in Australia. Purchasing it from either the USA or Germany is not on given the high postage rates which make the Upgrade Product considerably higher than the Professional Version. Why is SuSE not releasing the Upgrade product for resale here in Australia?
