Hi. Now I'm so far, that I can mount/unmout the DVD drive and the writer drive from being root. But as far, as I enter KDE, I cannot mount the device from their Icons on the KDE desktop. I know it has something to do with permissions, but what the reason is, I must say, that I don't know. But any help are most welcome. TIA. -- Med venlig hilsen - Best regards. But any help are most welcome. I was just looking at permissions: Make sure that your mount point is set to read/execute by others, drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 48 2003-05-02 09:43 dvd
The device special file is set to:
brw------- 1 xxx disk 22, 0 2003-03-14 08:07 hdc
I noticed that it is set to be owned by the use upon login to kde. But,
after sshing to the system as another user, I was still able to mount
the dvd.
It did appear that your settings in the fstab were ok. Here are my
settings, which are SuSE 8.2 out of the box.
/dev/dvd /media/dvd auto ro,noauto,user,exec

Hi Jerry and thanks for the kind reply.
I was just looking at permissions: Make sure that your mount point is set to read/execute by others, drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 48 2003-05-02 09:43 dvd
Mine is as follows: linux:~ # ls -l /dev/dvd lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 Jul 27 17:52 /dev/dvd -> hdc linux:~ # ls -l /dev/hdc brw-rw---- 1 root cdrecording 22, 0 Mar 14 14:07 /dev/hdc
The device special file is set to: brw------- 1 xxx disk 22, 0 2003-03-14 08:07 hdc I noticed that it is set to be owned by the use upon login to kde. But, after sshing to the system as another user, I was still able to mount the dvd.
Ok.

/dev/dvd /media/dvd auto ro,noauto, user, exec 0 0 After having looked on my settings, what do you then say Jerry ??. ---- Med venlig hilsen - Best regards. Erik Jakobsen - eja@urbakken.dk. Hi Anders.
What command do you run to mount them as root?
Just mount /media/dvd /media/cdrom and /media/ccrecorder. -- Med venlig hilsen - Best regards. Erik Jakobsen - eja@urbakken.dk. Licensed radioamateur with the callsign OZ4KK. SuSE Linux 8.2 Proff. Registered as user #319488 with the Linux Counter, http://counter.li.org.

OK, check the properties for the icons and see which devices/directories they're using. My guess is that they're not set to use the fstab entries.

The properties for the dvd drive on hdc: Device /dev/hdc Mount point: /media/cdrom And the properties for the writer on sr0: Device /dev/sr0 Mount point: /media/cdrecorder /etc/fstab: /dev/cdrecorder /media/cdrecorder auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 /dev/dvd /media/dvd auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 /dev/fd0 /media/floppy auto noauto,user,sync 0 0 /dev/hdc /media/cdrom auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 /dev/sr0 /media/cdrecorder auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 -- Med venlig hilsen - Best regards. The properties for the dvd drive on hdc:
Device /dev/hdc
Change it to /dev/cdrom
Mount point: /media/cdrom
And the properties for the writer on sr0:
Device /dev/sr0
Change it to /dev/cdrecorder
Mount point: /media/cdrecorder
After those changes, they'll be the same as on the fstab file. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

If you are logging in through x/g/kdm and if you are using SuSE Linux < 8.2: (1) Make sure the package pam_modules is installed (2) Make sure the pam_devperm line is uncommented in /etc/pam.d/xdm (2) Permissions for devices are defined in /etc/logindevperm IF you are using SuSE Linux 8.2 (1) Make sure the package resmgr is installed and resmgrd is started (2) Make sure the resmgr line is uncommented in /etc/pam.d/xdm (3) Device permissions are defined in /etc/resmgr.conf Charles -- We are using Linux daily to UP our productivity - so UP yours!
