[SLE] raid and yast on 10.0
Before I destroy something: I had to re-install a SUSE 10.0 system due to a disk failure. This system had 2 raid1 disks. In the new system, I see the two disks in Yast's partitioner and they are listed as RAID. When I select RAID from the menu at the bottom, yast offers to add these to /dev/md0. So far so good. After this, it offers to format these. Obviously I do not want this. Is it enough to say 'Don't format', and set the mount point to where the raid volume should be mounted? This would be what I would do for a single disk. But I do not know enough of how raid1 is handled to know if the same applies her. I realize this seems a no brainer. But I really do not want to mess the raid volumes. I just want to mount them again. I have the original /etc/md.conf file from the system that crashed. Yes.

You only need that when you create the RAID1, not for running it. /Per Jessen, Zürich -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

Yes.
I was a chicken. So I tried using the /etc/md.conf file from the old system. It works! If I ever have RAID disks I don't care about, I will try to let yast recreate them. I would be more comfortable if yast claimed that this is what it is doing. The 'create raid' language made me alert. Just to be clear: there is no issue with yast. That I know of. Maybe an improvement in the language used. Or a bit of info in the help pane for those who are trying to add volumes that are already RAID.

I think this is incorrect. It is needed when /etc/rc.d/boot.md sets up the raid volumes at boot. -- Roger Oberholtzer OPQ Systems AB Ramböll Sverige AB Kapellgränd 7 P.O. Actually, it isn't. Read the script and you'll see it will do an mdrun if the config is missing. I didn't check all of the script, but I'm guessing it relies on partitions having type=0xFD "RAID auto-detect". /Per Jessen, Zürich -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com
