Hi all.. I found a great little Gnome applet. It the one that shows the CPU usage as a fire. The higher the fire the more the CPU used. Is there anyway for me to use that applet in KDE? BTW I'm useing 7.2. Hi Jim, Normally gnome stuff can be run in KDE too, it will of course require several gnome libs and gtk and such kind of stuff. E.g. Evolution requires half of the ximian gnome desktop to be installed, but after installing that it will run (normally). If it is an rpm, YaST ought to tell you about the dependencies. The deal is I have both KDE and gnome installed. I must be missing a link or something. When I try to start it nothing happens. If you try to start them and there isn't a Gnome panel running they will try to start one and if they fail .. they will just die and give you that "bug buddy" talk back dialog ..or so I have seen. I have both install and I've tried to get GnomeICU running..but it's applet requires a panel so it dies. -----=====-----=====-----=====-----=====----- Ben Rosenberg mailto:ben@whack.org -----=====-----=====-----=====-----=====----- "Technological progress is like an axe in the hands of a pathological criminal" -AE
you can run gnomeicu -a and it will not requiere the panel

Hi Jim, Try figuring out (if you can; look in /opt/gnome/bin, for example, or in the menu editor if you can start a Gnome panel) what the applet is called *as a file*. For instance, one of the applets I like to run lives at /etc/opt/gnome/bin/modemlights_applet on my machine. Then try starting it in an xterm or equivalent -- don't forget to supply the full path -- and see what errors you get. This is my usual solution to the "when I try to start it, nothing happens" problem. :-) Regards, -- Tim Kynerd Sundbyberg (småstan i storstan), Sweden tim@tram.nu Sunrise in Stockholm today: 8:32 Sunset in Stockholm today: 14:45 My rail transit photos at http://www.kynerd.nu

A partial solution may be in the method you try and start the applet with. Try starting the gnome applet from the KDE terminal. Usually this will show an error message or two. From the error message you may be able to find a way to solve the problem. -- Ralph Sanford - If your government does not trust you, rsanford@telusplanet.net - should you trust your government? Like someone else wrote on this list: you need the Gnome panel to be able to use an Gnome applet. So why not start panel first ( you have to move kicker to another location on the screen first, otherwise you probably won' t see Panel) and then start the applet. This works for me. I didn't check all available applets but it works for Gaim and Stripchart for example. I you don't like to have/see the two taskbars kicker and panel, you could just minimize one? Oh, and Windowmaker has the same applet (wmfire). This starts OK in KDE, only not in the taskbar. cheers, Marcel
