Hi, everybody! I've got problems. Remember that HP LaserJet5? I've given up on using the Intel NetExpress card, and I've assebled a real server to connect to it via parallel port. I have lprold (BSD) installed, and used YaST to configure it as an LJ5Mono. I restarted lpd, but when I try to lpr something, I get: root@hpserver:/home/guest > lpr .profile lpr: connect: Connection refused jobs queued, but cannot start daemon. root@hpserver:/home/guest > This is *really* disturbing. The parport and parport_pc modules are loaded. Hmm, did you use the lprold package from the CDs or the latest package from ftp.suse.com? I got the new RPM. That seems to have fixed it. :) You know how things go when you've been working on something for three hours...you forget basic stuff. -- -=|JP|=- Jon Pennington | Atipa Linux Solutions -o) jpennington@atipa.com | http://www.atipa.com /\\ Kansas City, MO, USA | 816-241-2641 x107 _\_V -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
Yast messes up /etc/printcap the first time it tries to add a printer. I think local printers are configured using apsfilter (called by YaST.) Here is a sample of what you get for an HP postscript printer: ### BEGIN apsfilter: ### PS_300dpi letter mono 300 ### # Warning: Configured for apsfilter, do not edit the labels! # apsfilter setup Fri Sep 24 14:52:43 CDT 1999 # ascii|lp1|PS_300dpi-letter-ascii-mono-300|PS_300dpi letter ascii mono 300:\ :lp=/dev/lp1:\ :sd=/var/spool/lpd/PS_300dpi-letter-ascii-mono-300:\ :lf=/var/spool/lpd/PS_300dpi-letter-ascii-mono-300/log:\ :af=/var/spool/lpd/PS_300dpi-letter-ascii-mono-300/acct:\ :if=/var/lib/apsfilter/bin/PS_300dpi-letter-ascii-mono-300:\ :la@:mx#0:\ :tr=:cl:sh:sf: # lp|lp2|PS_300dpi-letter-auto-mono-300|PS_300dpi letter auto mono 300:\ :lp=/dev/lp1:\ :sd=/var/spool/lpd/PS_300dpi-letter-auto-mono-300:\ :lf=/var/spool/lpd/PS_300dpi-letter-auto-mono-300/log:\ :af=/var/spool/lpd/PS_300dpi-letter-auto-mono-300/acct:\ :if=/var/lib/apsfilter/bin/PS_300dpi-letter-auto-mono-300:\ :la@:mx#0:\ :tr=:cl:sh:sf: # raw|lp3|PS_300dpi-letter-raw|PS_300dpi letter raw:\ :lp=/dev/lp1:\ :sd=/var/spool/lpd/PS_300dpi-letter-raw:\ :lf=/var/spool/lpd/PS_300dpi-letter-raw/log:\ :af=/var/spool/lpd/PS_300dpi-letter-raw/acct:\ :if=/var/lib/apsfilter/bin/PS_300dpi-letter-raw:\ :la@:mx#0:\ :tr=:cl:sh:sf: # ### END apsfilter: ### PS_300dpi letter mono 300 ### Check /etc/printcap after you configure the printer. There should not be any empty line in the file, the printer daemon chokes when that happens, at least in earlier versions of suse. As root you can clean the queue with: # lpc clean all (or "lpc clear all", I don't remember) # lpc restart all Good luck. -- Rafael Herrera -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
YES!YES!YES! I have had the same problems over and over again. In addition to this problem, I get a series of pages with gibberish printed on them. This has been going on since SuSE 5.3. I somehow get the problem straightened out and all of sudden here we go again. My question: When is the Linux/Unix community going to either fix or replace this antiquated BSD printing system?? It's called lprng, and it's right next to lprold in the package selection. :) I don't have any documentation on running it with Samba printer shares, so I decided to let it slide this time. -- -=|JP|=- Jon Pennington | Atipa Linux Solutions -o) jpennington@atipa.com | http://www.atipa.com /\\ Kansas City, MO, USA | 816-241-2641 x107 _\_V -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

I use PLP which is also a replacement for the BSD lpr, I can't say that I have ever had any problems with printing (once I got the right emulation for my HP660C). /Michael -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
