[SLE] 6.4 contain 2.4 kernel?
I haven't read any news on kernel developments in a while, but does anyone have any rumours when kernel 2.4 will be out, and when the next SuSE edition (6.4 or 7.0?) will be out? I am still waiting patiently for something really new to get me up from 6.1... although every time I grab an rpm and it says I need updated glibs or something I growl that I need a newer suse edition... -- Stuart Hall Cheshire, Connecticut, USA Linux User# 141732 -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

The upcoming SuSE Linux 6.4 will most likely not contain a 2.4 kernel, because even if it will be finished by that time, it will still be way too new to be a safe default. However, we are working on getting as much applications as possible "Ready for 2.4" by compiling and testing them with the latest 2.3.xx kernel. Lenz, in the alsa-user list, Jaroslav says that 6.4 will have emu10k1
(SBLive et al) support. This along with wvdial.dod are two things which I
would like to see before I bother with another upgrade (from 6.1).
Can you at least give me a clue when it will be out?

The 2.4 kernel is months away. Alan Cox posted the TODO list a week or so ago and there's dozens of things on it, many of them quite involved. The code freeze Linus was after never really happened: he was too tempted by more features. 32 bit UIDs, NFSv3 and ReiserFS may well go in yet. Then it's got to be frozen and thoroughly tested. My experience of past Linux kernel releases says that we're 6 months away from a 2.4 anouncement, at the very least, and it won't be released until it is good and ready. It'll be a month after that before the distros start picking it up. I'd by SuSE-6.3 now since you are evidently struggling with an outdated system. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
