Re: [SLE] X or SuSE 8.1 crashing - how to tell - how to fix?

Funny, in 7.3 and 8.0 -- same machine -- I was able to leave anything running for months without problems. I mean, I could *make* problems by trying to configure stuff, but if I just ran programs or just let the machine sit, it was happy and content and never crashed.
This is almost certainly a problem with the 8.1 kernel then -- install k_deflt-2.4.19-174.i586.rpm from the SuSE updates like several others suggested if you have not already.

That has to be an explicit download and rpm invokation? Or can that be done as part of a YOU update? Those who have installed the new kernel... did it go in smoothly? Or did you have to track down a hundred dependencies? Anyway, it begins to sound like something to try. Is there a possible downside? I mean, given that I'm crashing at least every second day, a new kernel would be only an improvement, right? :-) And it *is* SuSE tested... oh... wait... that's what they said about the current kernel... ;-> Thank you all. I'll come back with my results. It would be nice to post a "SOLVED" in front of this one. /kevin
Kevin, I was having crash proble,ms also. My system would freeze and flash the caps lock & scroll lock LEDs. Yesterday, I used YOU to install the updated kernel that's available. It's called k_deflt-2.4.19-174.i586.rpm. I have a 56k modem so I just set it to do it during the night while I was sleeping. When I woke up that morning, it had completed the install. I rebooted and it hasn't crashed yet. Prior to the install of the new kernel, it would crash approximately every hour or two. Try the new kernel. i suspect it'll work for you too. I agree. I *also* had some bad memory causing instability problems, but still had crashes after removing the memory. This patch fixed that. Preston

Sorry to ask such a basic question, but how do I download and install the new kernel using YOU? The kernel is not in the list of packages which can be selected for download. So how do I find it and select it? I have tried downloading it using APT, but the gwdg.de server has been faulty for the past week. Using a 56K modem, I get the download speed rising to 3KB/s for a few seconds, then it rapidly falls to a few hundred bytes/sec, then it stalls for a minute or more, and eventually rises back to 3KB/s, and the cycle starts all over again. It regularly disconnects me. There are no problems with any other servers, that is why I would like to use YOU and a different server. Many thanks Keith
My SuSE 8.1 Athlon machine has been crashing X, relentlessly -- 46 times since late October, when I installed 8.1. On the advice of several people in this list, I have installed a kernel update k_athlon-2.4.19-167. In order to determine if the update is solving the problem, I am now about to subject the system to the most intense stress possible.... I'm announcing that it has not crashed in more than 3 days! There. Yes, I heard the collective gasp from the crowd when I dared to say that out loud. Tempting fate, and Murphy, in the most extreme way. I wasn't even touching wood or crossing my fingers when I said that! So, if the system doesn't immediately crumble under the pressure of that announcement, I'll know that the problem is solved. :-) /kevin
