[opensuse] I want SCPM back!

I am disappointed to discover that SCPM is not anymore on OpenSUSE. Networkmanager is NOT a replacement. I need to do heavy changes to configurations as I change networks. I am using the packages from 11.2, but I really WANT SCPM back. I hope that if we are many, scpm packages will be released again. You can find it here: http://software.opensuse.org/search?q=yast2-profile-manager&baseproject=openSUSE%3A11.3&lang=en&exclude_debug=true and http://software.opensuse.org/search?q=scpm&baseproject=openSUSE%3A11.3&lang=en&exclude_debug=true It's not in the main repos - it was dropped early on in the 11.3 development cycle, but at least one or two people have built it for 11.3 as you can see from the search results linked above. Note: I got this info by just doing a quick Google search which returned this: http://linux.derkeiler.com/Newsgroups/alt.os.linux.suse/2010-07/msg00323.htm... OK, teach a man to fish - is much easier to teach how to file a report. Therefore, just like in a computer class - I expect to see a VERY ELABORATE and DETAILED - written - procedure - on how to file a report. In my hay-day, in a professional IT job, I wrote very elaborate and detailed - Operator, Application Programmer, Systems Programmer, Management procedures. In almost every place I was at, I was in charge of writing the - DISASTER RECOVERY - procedures for the companies - even some from COMPLETE SCRATCH. The largest on I wrote was about - 100 pages - 8.5x11 - double spaced - typed. AND was fully TESTED - BY THE OPERATORS - and PROVED to be complete because we went to an IBM Disaster site in Boulder, CO - and - the procedure worked perfectly. You know... filing a bug report is not that hard. You are hand-held every step of the way through the procedure. Ultimately what it comes down to is logging into the Novell Bugzilla, and following the 3 step bug submission wizard. Every text box in the bug submit form is well documented/explained right in the form, and includes relevant examples. It really *is* easy... https://bugzilla.novell.com/enter_bug.cgi?product=openSUSE%2011.3&format=guided There is also some documentation here which goes into detail on certain areas: http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Submitting_bug_reports http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Bug_reporting_FAQ but is 100% not required to file a bug.... it's just extra info. Bug reporting in openSUSE is the easiest I've ever seen. It's well documented, you are guided with each and every relevant entry field. If someone can't understand the bug submit form... well... then there's little hope for them. If it is so EASY then why aren't using it more - one possible answer is that the person really don't know what the hell he/she doing to fill in the text boxes. Case in point, when I was doing the Sys. Prog. support on an AS/400 with new users, a lady called us and said her terminal had - wavy and jumpy - text. We spent, literally, a half day - 4 hrs - on her problem - we switched out terminals, with another persons - same thing - after the switch. Before the switch, it was working fine. Replaced the coax cable with a new cable - still the same. Called IBM Support - no help. Called IBM Level 2 support - no help. Called an IBM rep to come on sight - no help. FINALLY, after about 4 hrs, we told the lady we have no idea - THEN - she FINALLY said - well every morning, the first thing I do is turn on this LITTLE fan - would that cause a problem. BINGO, LIKE MAGIC, WE TURNED OFF HER FAN - AND - THE WAVINESS - S T O P P E D. With people like this floatin' around - how are they going to fill in a - simple - error report. When last I tried I never got to any point where there were text boxes. I never got past "Waiting for secure-www.novell.com", only to eventually be followed some time later with: "504 Gateway Time-Out Lost connection to origin server". Way to go Novell!

I laughed so hard when I saw this. Extreme deja vu. Had exactly the same thing happen. We had 2 bright young digi-boys spend the better part of a day on exactly this same problem. I originally come from an analog RF background prior to getting involved with PCs and just happened to be walking down the hall when they asked me to come look. I listened intently to their long tale and soon arrived at a conclusion they knew nothing of coils, magnetic fields, or how CRTs and electric motors operate. Unplugged the fan sitting on top of the monitor, moved it to the other side of the office, problem solved. They were, of course, dumbfounded and embarrassed - but the thing is they were missing the knowledge they needed to solve the problem. All digi- boi and nothing else. -Mike -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Maybe when I get some time I will try it again. The last time I tried to register and use this it was broken and I gave up. If it does indeed work the next time I attempt it, possibly I may begin to work down the list I have here. Should stuff get paid attention to and looked over, maybe I will continue. If either doesn't happen I have way too many other places to spend my time. My first attempt to register with the Novell Bugzilla left me with a bad taste in my mouth. For a technology company to let something so potentially useful fall into the state of disrepair I witnessed should be embarassing, to say the least. Perhaps it will work when next I try. I have a list of stuff smarter people than me could fix. First on the list would be Novell Bugzilla. -Mike -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I did in thread "Please, someone report these bugs and features" on this list. Not that is really necessary for ex-IT person, but it can be new to you and for your convenience I wrote it. So just check your past emails and see details. Apropos: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=629415 is in NEEDINFO status, waiting for your comment. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=629416 is closed, RESOLVED as INVALID. As Repair System is depreciated from 11.3 on, you may want to go to the https://features.opensuse.org/ and request some form of replacement. Requesting "VERY ELABORATE and DETAILED - written - procedure", but then on another occasion, like in above bug reports, ignoring other people requests for information, doesn't present you like detailed person and consequently diminish your reputation. Waiving with your IT experience in this light doesn't help to improve your score. Ex-IT person should have more respect to other IT people. A bug reporting procedure is a lot better version then Bugzilla default, but whatever you find not intuitive and in need for further improvement you can file as enhancement request, or even usability bug, as it prevents one category of users to report bugs. Your insight, as inexperienced bug reporter, can be valuable to make procedure easier for non-technical users. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

This being said, I've never maintained a package for OpenSuSE before, so if you could please point me to the proper way to apply for this, or even better, how to get started, that would really help.
As I've seen in the bug report you already got advice :) Indeed, yes.
Direct all your questions regarding packaging to opensuse-packaging@opensuse.org where you'll quickly get answers. Thanks, I will.

Unchanged. As long as no one steps up to maintain and develop scpm it will stay dropped. In the bug I created, I also volunteered as maintainer (if you want something done, the best way is often to do it yourself).

Why not do it using the build service? That's exactly how it will be done. I've already received the needed information. Now I should read the docs and learn ;-)
