Ethereal is a program that can monitor network connectins and it is graphical too. But I think it may not be so useful for detecting hacking-attempts because it generates masses of output, making it difficult to analyse what's going on.
I want to know who try to break in and who did a scan on my computer.
Install portsentry. This is a program that can detect scanning attempts. It can also take protective actions automatically.

Have you installed scanlogd? Maybe you must check the settings in /etc/syslog.conf ('man syslog.conf' if I remember correctly).
Thanks to all.
