[SuSE Linux] Running kdm with SuSE
In all the instructions I have seen on setting up kdm, I am supposed to change the run level in /etc/inittab to "5" and substitute kdm when it calls for xdm. The only trouble is that there is no "5" in the SuSE version of inittab. Multiple users with xdm is level "3" as I see it. Could someone give me specific instructions on setting up kdm in the SuSE version of /etc/inittab? Thanks in advance. - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
Yes on suse ints runlevel 3. You also need to edit a suse file in etc, I think it was rc.config and set a variable DISPLAYMANAGER=kde there. Then all should be OK jon

If your KDE works (i.e. it comes up correctly when you type "startx"), you can start it via XDM or KDM. You just need to set the default runlevel to 3 for a SuSE box. The line from my /etc/inittab looks like this : # default runlevel id:3:initdefault: You can use YAST or edit rc.config to choose between XDM or KDM. The keyword is WINDOWMANAGER. One hint : if you experience problems with KDM (KDM comes up allright, but when you try to log on the screen goes blank for a couple of secs and then youŽre back in KDM), your version of KDM is not configured to use the shadow password system that SuSE uses by default. Then you can try to build from the sources and use ./configure --with-shadow for the packet KDEBASE. hope this helps cheerio Jerry -- shit - what - rollers - no - yes - shit - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
It helped a lot, Jerry. And thanks also to punt for the quick answers from both of you. It was easy to configure in rc.config and kdmrc once I knew where to look. Now I am trying to figure out how to cut down the number of users in the login screen to just "root" and "karcher". Thanks again.
