[opensuse] Beginner (again): How do I change the keyboard layout?
(I realize, that the stupidity of my question and my unability to sprinkle it with linux-style 3-letter acronyms must be annoying to this community so that no answer has been given. Sorry for that. Instead maybe you could point me to another source, where I can find an answer without causing people any trouble.) I am a beginner with Linux. So, in case somebody answers, keep the amount of "linux specific jargon" low, because I will probably not understand it. 1. Installed OpenSUSE 11.1 on HP nx9005 notebook. (hardware is working fine) So far so good. 2. Used YaST to install a secondary language (Japanese) in addition to the system language = English. 3. SCIM setting: tried to uncheck all languages I do not need and check ONLY Japanese, English and German * SCIM keyboard list does NOT contain a German keyboard layout. Cannot find a place where to add one. 4. Personal settings: added a second KB layout (German) to the primary (Japanese) 5. Task bar shows now TWO flags: Japan / Germany; can be switched by clicking. 6. Personal settings: German is marked as secondary language. 7. Key shortcut to switch between keyboard layouts (?): Alt+left Shift * Does NOT work. I am cycled through a horrendous number of "input methods" listed under SCIM, most of which I have never even heard of or could imagine what they are used for. 8. In OpenOffice Writer I can currently use (clicking on the keyboard icon in the task tray) an English keyboard layout (write English) and after activating Anthy (requires a number of clicks) can also write in Japanese. Fine. But I could not yet figure out how to make the German keyboard layout - which is supposed to be available there - work. Going through 4-5 user guides (documentation) has not helped me so far. All I want to do: a) have THREE (not the present intimidating long list) KB layouts: Japanese, English and German b) be able to switch between these using a SIMPLE shortcut (like Alt+Shift) (I do that every day on Windows machines) * This cannot be so difficult, can it? WHAT did I miss? Where did I miss it? I appreciate your help (... and have still more questions ...) No. For example, I did not reply because I do not know the answer. Your writing culture has nothing to do with it. I believe kde3 has a gadget somewhere to do keyboard change fast. I don't use it, I just bumped into it years ago. Dunno about kde4. I can't search it for you because I don't have kde installed in this setup. In the gnome control center there is a keyboard setup configuration window where several layouts can be defined, but I have no time to test it now. I suppose it works. Then, if you don't get an answer here, there are also very active oS forums. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. Thomas.. don't be afraid to ask the questions... just realize that not all questions will get an answer here. Sometimes you need to try more than once (because your question is lost in the shuffle)... rephrase your question or provide more info... or try another venue like the openSUSE Forums (for example http://opensuse.us/ ). Any lack of answer to your original posting is 100% not attributed to how you asked this question - in fact, once you strip off your apologies, your question could easily have been asked by any one of us here on the mailing list. I use a single language in my install... any "help" I would give would be pure guessing (more so than usual :-) ) There are a few here that do use multiple language and keyboard settings.. maybe they will chime in here and offer suggestions... Same comments here as other have made about the lack of need for apologies. Are you using Gnome or KDE (or other)? Which version? < snip>

Does <CTRL>-<ALT>-k do anything? -- Don -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Thank you!

It is KDE 4.1.3 (build 4.9)

Yes, it changes the country flag shown in the right lower corner of the screen. From Japanese to German and back. But this has NO effect on the behavior of the keyboard. If I want to change in input method between English (no need for an extra keyboard layout) and Japanese, I have to click on the keyboard icon to switch through a series(!) of choices. Then I am able to type either in Japanese or English. No shortcut key works.
But if I change to the "German keyboard layout" (German flag shows), I still get the same behavior as with English. No German characters are available. With YaST -> software management I added Japanese and German as "additional languages". If changing the KB layout is really sooo difficult ... I believe there is work to done. I am grateful for any help. Thomas -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thomas, I tried this with German and French keyboard layouts at work where I am using openSUSE 11.0 updated to KDE4.3. That seemed to work and changed the keyboard behavior. I am just trying at home now (opensuse 11.2, KDE 4.3.3) and I am seeing *some* change in the keyboard layout. Running through some of the characters US-English abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ German abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxzy ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXZY (I don't know how this will show up in your email, but here 'y' and 'z' are interchanged.) Also some of other keys have changed []\,./ ü+#,.- So something is happening, but I don't think this would get you far in German. I'll check if the same thing occurs at work later today and let you know. -- Don -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
