Can we also presume this problem drive won't READ commercial media
such as any music or software disk when running under 12.3? When I place a disk in /dev/sr0, opensuse 12.3 recognizes the disk. I can open dolphin and view the contents of the disk. However, k3b doesn't see the disk so I can't burn anything to it in that device. k3b only sees a disc when it is inserted to device /dev/sr1.
Ah, that's good to know, so the device is operational at some level but not for K3b burning. Starting to look solely like a K3B issue and not hardware in any way.
In the K3B Main Menu, Settings, Configure System Permissions, in the Devices list, do both units appear and have the same permissions?
(apologies if you've mentioned this before, I don't have the whole thread available right now).
Obviously they should be both set as SR1 is set.
In k3b Setup, only device /dev/sr1 appears. /dev/sr0 does not appear. I spent some time looking at this during the last two evenings and haven't found a way to add /dev/sr0 to the list of devices. In Settings - k3b> Devices, only device /dev/sr1 is present. There is a sentence present in the header that says "K3b tries to detect all your devices properly. If K3b is unable to detect your drive, you need to modify their permissions to give K3b write access to all devices." But since the device isn't present in the list, it seems that maybe another file would need to be modified to allow k3b to see the DVD Burner /dev/sr0 so that I may set its permissions. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Well, we've gotten to the root of the problem it would seem. Perhaps the Developer for K3B could send some pointers your way. I suppose you (root) could look at the device in /dev and compare the permissions on /dev/sr1 and set /dev/sr0 to be the same but I seem to remember there is some function in OpenSuse that resets these on each boot. At least you could look there to see if they have different permissions. (these zero size entries in a "pertend" file system) But if you do decide to modify them, remember their settings. And perhaps seek better advice than I am able to give on the subject of permissions on /dev devices. Just throwing this out there... My K3B is installed from Packman, I had to allow vendor changes to get that to work, but it gets around some intentional breakage in the OpenSuse Packages. -- _____________________________________ ---This space for rent--- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
