Welcome aboard Rob; I see you have tried several versions of Linux. However, in a very short order I bet you will find SuSE your favorite distro.. -- 73 de Donn Washburn __" http://www.hal-pc.org/~n5xwb " Ham Callsign N5XWB / / __ __ __ __ __ __ __ 307 Savoy St. / /__ / / / \/ / / /_/ / \ \/ / Sugar Land, TX 77478 /_____/ /_/ /_/\__/ /_____/ /_/\_\ LL# 1.281.242.3256 Dump Microsoft Software - Stop virus email Email: n5xwb@hal-pc.org " http://counter.li.org " #279316

could you explain a little bit more about what exactly didn't "work in Suse 9.2 kde?" I have it running on three separate boxes here, which go from a poor lowley Celeron to gee whiz athlon " THe only "problem" was the ncurses install on the celeron. Apparently teh suse install script wasn't happy w/ the "on board" graphoics chip. Once past the install all is peachy and the kde desktop is actually faster than the old 9.1 version was... You can make the basic setup fairly lite weight if you don't use KDE but substiture something like xface or Black Box or I suspect a whole boatload of other windows managers which are included w/ Suse . There are even screensavers that are really easy on resources, like pacman and pong ( tho pong would really benefit from a sound file added to it <G>) There are even good looking but resource lite screensavers that are more complex, but I just enjoyed having the thing look like it had a pong match running on it.. <G> Is your problem w/ the installation or are you trying to run it from the Eval CD ??? so a bit more information is needed if we are to help you , otherwise, welcome aboard! -- j -- nemo me impune lacessit

Well, welcome then Rob... Nice to chat... but, I didn't catch the problem you are asking about... Jerry
Hello, I use SuSE 9.2. Overall locale is English, keyboard is Spanish (allows typing in English, French & Spanish). Since SuSE 7.3, I've used this setup with no problems, but now -at least in Lyx- dead keys are alive. Normally, when you hit the dead key (usually an accent), nothing happens. Then, when you hit the vowel, you get the vowel plus the accent. Right now, I get an accent and -next to it- a vowel. I believe this is a bug in SuSE's Qt rpm, which Lyx uses. Could someone suggest a workaround? Thanks. -- Pablo Ortúzar

Try Spanish (CP 850) keyboard from Yast>system>keyboard layout. Suerte.

Nope, this is not the solution, I have the same problem and since I've bought SuSE 9.2, I've tried for the first time to post a support query (I think I use SuSE since 5.3). The answer was: "Unfortunately, ********* configuration / troubleshooting is not covered within the scope of the free installation support." But I think this is not the case, because the system (or part of it) is broken in a fresh default instalation (wish I did). BTW, I'm using locale en_US.ISO-8859-1 with portuguese keyboard, and the problem is the same, I get for instance ~a for ã (atilde). From what I could search, Pablo is right, regarding the explanation of the problem. bye, Helder

Hello, It's a shame (meaning that SuSE should have solved this at least since KDE 3.3.0 went out), but I had to compile myself the Qt library and use a very ugly hack to solve the problem. (Yes, I did use the SuSE feedback form to report the bug, and yes, I'm a owner of I don't know how many boxed SuSE distributions, so I feel entitled to rant a little bit...) What I did was: i) Download qt-copy-041116.tar.bz2 from the KDE project and uncompressed it to a directory under my home dir; ii) Looked at the qt source rpm to know wish were the dependencies necessary to compile Qt under SuSE 9.2 and installed the missing ones (to do this I installed qt3-3.3.3-xx.src.rpm and looked at the /usr/src/packages/SPECS/qt3.spec file); iii) Followed the instructions from: http://developer.kde.org/build/compile_kde3_3.html and from the INSTALL file to compile Qt. To run lyx and eric3 with accents I did a small script for each one of the applications: #!/bin/sh export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=<path to the new qt lib>:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH /usr/X11R6/bin/lyx $* and put it on my ~/bin. My problem now is that this is an untested Qt version, so I suppose this might introduce some kind of instability, and it is not very nice to have duplicated libs, but so far so good... bye, Helder
