Where in the world is openSUSE??
Over at Debian.org they have a map showing where in the world their developers are from http://www.debian.org/devel/developers.loc If you have seen Frappr.com, it is a website which let's groups share a map and do the same sort of thing, but it is full of ads. Well, I created this page http://peter.flodin.net/openSUSE.html It uses the coordinates it finds on our wiki: http://en.opensuse.org/Coordinates and then plots them in realtime. The format of that page is Latitude | Longitude | Info box description | Marker name The HTML page is all client-side javascript. Oh yeah, if you want to add your marker, this site is good for getting coordinates: http://www.multimap.com/ once you have found your location, click on the Link button and it will give you the coordinates, for privacy reasons I would suggest rounding them off. My computer keeps telling me to Have Lots of Fun...and it was the only reason I did this, and I share it with you without any expectation. Peter "Pflodo" Flodin

Good idea - I have - a suggestion: the wiki page should contain a link to your page and an explanation what this is and how people can add theirself - basically the content of your mail (didn't do it for now because I don't know if it breaks your script) In case your script doesn't work well with these additional comments on the page, maybe the coordinates could be placed on the talk page. - a bugreport: your server doesn't like utf8, see "Nürnberg" for example - the "balloon" on the map shows "ü" instead of "ü" - added myself ;-)

What shall we call it? This is more important than usual as the script needs to be updated if it is moved. Map OpenSUSE Map Location Map Community Map? I think I would make the Coordinate page a subpage of whatever page is decided upon.

This is all client-side scripting so to get around javascript security I do a little hack. As I can't get your browser to download a file (the coordinates) via javascript from a different domain than the html file that contains the javascript. ie I can't have my javascript in the html file hosted on my server download the coordinates directly from opensuse.org. which are here in their raw format http://en.opensuse.org/index.php?title=Coordinates&action=raw I get around this by having a php file on my server with a single line that "includes" the coordinates "file" from opensuse.org <?php include("http://en.opensuse.org/index.php?title=Coordinates&action=raw"); ?> So the script loads this "local" file http://peter.flodin.net/coordinates.php If you click on that you can see that the encoding has been lost. Interestingly IE displays this as the correct character on the map. If we hosted the html file on the opensuse.org domain we could retrieve the Coordinates directly as they are in the same domain. Or figure out how to include UTF-8 files with php. Peter 'Pflodo' Flodin.

Instead of creating a new page, I have revamped (rewritten) the OpenSUSE Community page, as it needed it, and included the map. http://en.opensuse.org/OpenSUSE_Community Incidentally it is good timing as Google Maps just upgraded coverage of Europe to include Road maps. Now if they would only do Australia.... Peter "Pflodo" Flodin.

Very nice! Would it hurt your script if you add something on the coordinates page? Just a little explanation what this is about, maybe with a link to the OpenSUSE_Community/Map page. -- with kind regards, ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Martin Lasarsch, Subsystems +49 911 74053 181 +49 179 206 74 74 SUSE LINUX GmbH, Maxfeldstr. 5 90409 Nuremberg martin.lasarsch@suse.de ---------------------------------------------------------------------- simply change to www.suse.de

Peter "Pflodo" Flodin. very cute :-)
it should be even better if you could add <pre> tags on the coordinate page to get rid of the messy aspect thanks :-) jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://dodin.org/galerie_photo_web/expo/index.html http://lucien.dodin.net http://fr.susewiki.org/index.php?title=Gérer_ses_photos

It is software, we can do anything :-) ........ given enough time. I think I might use a wiki template to insert coordinates, and then in my javascript that reads the raw wiki page strip everything else, which would mean you could format the page in anyway wanted. It just requires some clever regex statements, and some time. Peter 'Pflodo' Flodin

Note that the office building the Nuernberg office is in is shown as under construction by Google Maps ... But is finished for around 4 years now ;) Ciao, Marcus
