su - cd /dev ../MAKEDEV scd1 Michael,
Tried to do as you suggested (exactly as you instructed) but I can't get a makedev to be accepted in any form of syntax that I try. That is what prompted me to make my first inquiry. Keep getting messages like no such file or directory, or unknown command. Johannes solved my problem with the mknod command but I still would like to know why a ../MAKEDEV or any other variation will not be recognized. Bob S.

My guess is that MAKEDEV is not part of the standard SuSE distribution. I checked versions 6.0, 6.3, 6.4 and 7.1 and none has it. Just for comparison, I checked a RedHat 6.2 at work and it does have MAKEDEV. Jim Cunning
