[opensuse] No sound with Skype 4.0 on openSUSE 12.2
Since reinstalling Skype 4.0 on this oS 12.2 system running KDE 4.8.5 there has been no sound output for receiving calls or ringing. It all worked on the previous 12.1 system. On the previous system, Skype detected that pulseaudio was controlling the sound system, and offered a button to open the PA controller. This is missing now, and skype doesn't offer the default device known to YaST and KDE System Settings Phonon, unless it's what it calls default device, which doesn't work :~| All the other sounds work OK, e.g. system sounds, music output etc. I've googled and read through the mailing list archives, but can't find an answer. Most messages are about skype not installing properly on 64 bit systems (like this one), but that's not my problem. Any suggestions, please? That made me think in 32-bit mode, so I installed alsa-plugins-pulse-32bit, which pulled in a load of 32bit libraries. Hey presto, Skype now works :) Bob -- Bob Williams System: Linux 3.4.6-2.10-desktop Distro: openSUSE 12.2 (x86_64) with KDE Development Platform: 4.8.5 (4.8.5) "release 2" Uptime: 06:00am up 4 days 11:53, 7 users, load average: 0.12, 0.25, 0.24 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I faced a similar problem and the solution is to install the -32bit version of the following libraries: alsa-plugins-pulse, libpulse0, and libpulse-mainloop-glib0. I am not sure whether the latter is actually needed. I also have libpulse-mainloop-glib0 installed, but I don't know whether it was always there or whether it got pulled when I installed alsa-plugins-pulse-32bit, which solved the problem for me.

I don't think that bug describes my problem, which was no sound output at all from skype. I think the problem is in the skype-n.n.n.n-suse.i586.rpm packaging.
Best, Andrea
