[opensuse] KDE 4.2.1 hosed
Hello, Hope some can help. I was running OSS 11.1 32 bit with KDE 4.1.3 -> 4.2.0 -> 4.2.1. I inadvertantly ran zypper up to try to get libqt4.5 to install a wifi plasmoid. Now I have install kde 4.2.67 and my laptop will only boot into a black screen. Network doesn't work. How, other than reinstalling from DVD and going through upate from KDE 4.1.3 -> 4.2.0 -> 4.2.1, do I get my kde 4.2.1 back and the desktop back? Any help appreciated. --Keith -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yes.....remove the following files, and then you can setup your desktop again. At least you can logon again and have a desktop again. Thanks. I got it back, but still have a weird icon for the kickoff app launcher menu. It is a blue circle with a "play" button instead of the gecko. What do I need to change? KDE 4.x is not beta. There is a released KDE 4.2.x which is not beta and there is an unreleased KDE 4.3, which indeed is beta or rather alpha since it will be released in summer. KDE 4.0 was a developer-only release, something like alpha quality coming out of the KDE project. KDE 4.1 was a early-adopter release, something like beta quality coming out of the KDE project. KDE 4.2 is for general use, something the KDE project feels is final release quality. However, at this time openSUSE packages for KDE 4.2 are not officially supported. KDE 4.2 hasn't (and, IIRC, won't) be released as an online update for any openSUSE version up to 11.1. As such, end-users should feel justified calling KDE 4.2 on openSUSE beta software, as it still hasn't been part of a release yet. Being not part of an official release makes the software release-candidate at best. Normally unreleased software is beta or worse quality. Also, lack of support *is* something that lowers the quality of software, usually to beta-quality or lower. -- Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. ,= ,-_-. =. bss@iguanasuicide.net ((_/)o o(\_)) ICQ: 514984 YM/AIM: DaTwinkDaddy `-'(. .)`-' http://iguanasuicide.net/ \_/

There is a lot of software that is not included in official distro, but it is good software. Man-hour constrains make impossible to include them. Software included in Education project is perfect example.
Also, lack of support *is* something that lowers the quality of software, usually to beta-quality or lower.
That can be your internal way to simplify thinking about quality, but again Beta is used to describe development stage, ie. code quality, while support means much more than just code. It is problem resolution that is not only code debugging, but also creating documentation, user education, help with configuration for particular purpose, guaranteed time farames for response, guaranteed length of support, development of solutions based on software under support, and more. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I'm not saying the software isn't good. I'm saying that it hasn't gotten the level of attention required to make release-quality software. The reason why is not relevant to the argument.[1] If you install anything from outside the official repositories, you should consider yourself an alpha/beta tester for the unit "that software on your distribution" even if the unit "that software" is considered release-quality by the project that develops it.

Beta is a beyond flexible term these days. However, it has always included more than just the state of the source code. Beta is a state of the product as a whole, particularly the expected user experience, which includes the level of support users will receive. -- Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. ,= ,-_-. =. bss@iguanasuicide.net ((_/)o o(\_)) ICQ: 514984 YM/AIM: DaTwinkDaddy `-'(. .)`-' http://iguanasuicide.net/ \_/

You should downgrade to the stable 4.2.1. The 4.2.67 you have now is kde 4.3 pre-alpha, beta 1 isn't due until mid-May, so right now it's far too early to look at if you're not a tester. How do I downgrade to 4.2.1 from 4.2.67?
In YaST->Software management: First remove the KDE:/KDE4:/UNSTABLE repository and add the KDE:/KDE4:/Factory:/ repository Then select one of the core kde packages, such as libkde4, go to the Versions tab and select the proper 4.2.1 This should pull in all the other 4.2.1 packages as dependencies. But just in case, go through the list and make sure there are no packages highlighted in red that aren't selected for "upgrade". If there are any, select the proper version for them as well It's more work than an upgrade, but package managers generally aren't optimized for downgrades Anders -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

First fix repositories.
Terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F1), login as root, run:
zypper lr
to see what repos are anabled.
Disable UNSTABLE repo with
zypper mr -d

Probably delete that one, and then add a new launcher. Click on the bar far right, then add widgets....there you'll find a new launcher. You'll have to move it to the far left on the bar. Click on bar (far right) again, and then move cursor on the bar till you're "on" the icon you want to move....left click on it till you have it in it's new place. Not sure whether I understood you correctly, but if you want to use KDE 4.2 you should not use Qt 4.5. Hence if rpm -qa | grep libqt4 shows that you have 4.5 and not 4.4 installed, you should downgrade those. On 11.1 you do not need any extra repo for Qt, but just the Qt version that is supplied by the official update repo.
