StarOffice 5.2 setup freezes in SuSE 7.1
Hello, I just purchased the SuSE 7.1 professional, I selected on the setup to install the StarOffice 5.2, and eveyrthing worked fine during the installation of SuSE After my first boot on the system (KDE2) I saw the StarOffice icon on the desktop, I clicked on it and the installation screeen of StarOffice appeared, i click next on the button, then i click Next again, the screen freezes i cannot move the mouse, anything, sometimes after 1 minute of moving the mouse you can see the the pointer moves for a few seconds and then the screen continues to be freezed. I cannot run any other app, I cannot kill the application, I also can press the reset button of my computer :(, while its freezed i can see the the hard disk is not reading or writting anything. Does anybody know shy is that?, I've looked on the Support Database and in the list archives but theres nothing related to that (The list archive search gives me ZERO results using the StarOffice keyword...weird). My system is a Pentium III, 125MB RAM, SuSE 7.1, running KDE 2.1.2 Thanks, Ernesto Marquina emarquina@pobox.com http://zeroth.manilasites.com =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" -Arthur C. Ciao, hope not to generate any holy war, but if I were you I'd look at www.openoffice.org. I installed the precompiled binaries of 6.19 and the apps were already much better than these provided by soffice 5.2. Best regards from Italy, Stefano Ernesto Marquina wrote:

Ciao Stefano, hey but the openoffice project is still in pre-alpha AFAIK, so that means is not stable at all huh?. and yes! I have 7.1, and my staroffice doesnt work at all, it freezes as soon as i run the installation script. do you suggest me to get the binaries from Sun website? i was wondernig, how many if you use HTML mail and ASCII mail as a standard? Suggestion: Why in order to answer to a message that comes from the mailing list we have to use the reply all button?, In other mailing list, the majordomo, adds the mail of the mailing list to the Reply-to header to all the mails that are sent, that seems much more practical huh? Ciao Ernesto and all the guys, ok, ok, openoffice it's in "pre-alfa" but it seems to work quite fine (at least for me). Ernesto Marquina wrote:

It never crashed on my 2.4.3 and only mis-handed some formats, although worked better than soffice5.2.

Now, I'm looking forward to try the latest version (I think 6.27, but I'm not sure): I just downloaded yesterday the binaries from www.openoffice.org. How do you run the installation script (with or w/o /net options)?
i was wondernig, how many if you use HTML mail and ASCII mail as a standard?
Didn't understabd this point: isn't this mail pure formatted in ASCII?

I think that this issue has already been discussed several times. Although considering the possible improvement on ease of use, I don't think it's a big problem and, last but not least, it is anyway totally managed by SuSE team. Ciao and best regards, Stefano

HTML email is a pain in the butt.. You never know who is going to be able to read your email (if you send in HTML format) and who is just going to delete the message after speaking unprintable words. I'm glad that KMail supports it, but I prefer text email just the same. Have a great day :) Steven
