How can it be?
Hi,
years ago I had that problem on xfce4 and it was somehow linked to the theme I used. I don't remember which theme was the trouble maker but changing all the theme related settings might help you here.
I didn't change the theme... but the machine was upgraded to 15.2, and often the theme changes.
Thanks, I'll check the theme later.
I changed the theme, but xfce4-panel keeps wasting memory.

xfce4-panel is the heaviest memory user in the machine. For the moment, the only tool I have is to hibernate and restore the machine. Will try now.

Well, now 1.375g of memory used by xfce4-panel is swapped out, and available RAM is doubled.
Still xfce4-panel is using more than half a gigabyte of RAM, which seems a tremendous waste.
...
Well, I just used "reset panel defaults", we'll see what happens in two weeks. For now, the item is gone from "top".

6 gigs of available memory, much better.
I had forgotten about this. But since the past night I am running a heavy backup process that was going slow, and I looked at memory usage. xfce4-panel had more than 2 Gigs in swap, and 1.6 in resident memory. It occurred to me that it might be possible to restart it, and yes, it is trivial: xfce4-panel -r And my backup process is going faster, more ram for buffers/cache. At worst, I might put that restart in a cronjob. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R.
