Well, I do not know what desktop, but in Plasma when akonadi crashes somtimes it stays as a zombi process and will have to be terminated with timeout. I have seen this more in 15.2 than 15.1 but maybe you could investigate.

Second thing that would come to my mind is a network mounted disk.

Third, if you have a Raid that it is running a scheduled scrub.

Last, it may be SDDM not being able to get rid of an unused session.

But all this are guesses of the unwashed masses, just to give some ideas.

OK, I run mdraid and have raid1 mirrors. It might be that. But I've been running raid for several years and never had this problem before.

Maybe they changed the way the scheduled automatic scrub takes place when at the given time the machine is offline? On my TW I have it force after some time. If I do it manually I do not encounter issues. You may have a look at the journal to see if there is a message that mdadm began a scrub and was interrupted?
