[opensuse] Leap 15.1 shutdown problem
Hello: Recently my openSUSE 15.1 system doesn't shut down as before. When I select turn off computer or run /sbin/poweroff the shutdown process starts and very fast reaches this state: Reached target shutdown. But the computer is not turned off but are still running for a ~90 seconds (the general systemd timeout). The console also says in red a few lines above; Failed unmounting /home. Some process may run which uses /home dir and delays shutdown. ? How can I trace and fix this? Thanks, Istvan

whatever you have actively accessing the /home directory is you problem. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet freenode

Not very helpful Patrick! And doesn't begin to answer his question.

That's not exact. He may have applications that access home, say LibreOffice. Still, the system should kill the application if he forgets, and data would be lost. His problem, yes, but powerdown should not delay. And there may be apps of the desktop which he did not personally start, so they are not "his problem". In any case, the kernel should kill them silently and without delay. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.1 x86_64 at Telcontar)

Well, I do not know what desktop, but in Plasma when akonadi crashes somtimes it stays as a zombi process and will have to be terminated with timeout. I have seen this more in 15.2 than 15.1 but maybe you could investigate. Second thing that would come to my mind is a network mounted disk. Third, if you have a Raid that it is running a scheduled scrub. Last, it may be SDDM not being able to get rid of an unused session. But all this are guesses of the unwashed masses, just to give some ideas. I think it would be helpful if you are a bit more verbous about what kind of system is this: desktop env., raid or not, btrfs or not, swap or not (thinking of it, 15.1 has had issues with swap with me, which would take some time to unload).

OK, I run mdraid and have raid1 mirrors. It might be that. But I've been running raid for several years and never had this problem before. Istvan

Maybe they changed the way the scheduled automatic scrub takes place when at the given time the machine is offline? On my TW I have it force after some time. If I do it manually I do not encounter issues. You may have a look at the journal to see if there is a message that mdadm began a scrub and was interrupted?

"Trace": https://freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/systemd/Debugging/ "Fix" is something more involved because systemd is just a messenger here, it depends on what program did not stop and why.
