Symlink libncurses.so.5.3 to libncurses.so.5, run ldconfig and you should be fine.

Wrong answer :) If libncurses.so.5.3 does have a soname of libncurses.so.5, that symlink should actually already exist as ldconfig creates them when it's run. In general, one should *never* manually set the symlink. Philipp

Hey Phillipp: I fixed it! some how the drive was not cleaned properly. fsck.reiser /mnt/hdb1 fixed it. The error just lead me a stray. Philipp Thomas wrote:

what does ldd /media/hdb1/lib/libncurses.so.5.3 say? Note that when you do chroot, all needed libraries must be in the chroot environment.

YaST has my monitor listed a VESA when in fact it is an SVGA to that may be the problem, but how do I change it?
