Hello Every time I try to run YaST2 online update module (whether from a command line or in a graphics mode) it initially says: Trying to initialize FTP/HTTP connection.... and then immediately Can not connect to www.suse.de. Check your connection I have a working connection to the internet and I can ping www.suse.de without any problems. YaST2 online update used to work while the system was being updated from another location (in Germany) and then all of a sudden it ceased to work when we brought the laptop to Poland Can anybody enlighten me on what the problem can be ? My system is SuSE Linux 8.1 Professional running on a TOSHIBA laptop. I`ve heard rumours that YaST2 online uptade utility that comes with a stock SuSE 8.1 can only operate in an active ftp mode, but this should not be an issue in this particular situation as I disabled my whole firewall to allow active FTP to check if YaST2 online update must be run in an active FTP mode, but unfortunately it still did not work. Ping means there is connectivity, but it doesn't mean you have a working connection, i.e. can browse. If you can ping www.suse.com, then your nameservers are also working.

Are you now behind a proxy? Maybe you need to configure the connection with a proxy. -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: http://www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871 God said, I AM that I AM. OR as is the case most of the time, the server is overloaded with connections. Either pick a mirror site or try back latter. -- Ken Schneider unix user since 1989 linux user since 1994 SuSE user since 1998

Except if it fails when YOU is trying to get the list of servers: that must be got from suse server. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

No, you can set up your own source of servers addresses if you like, by editing /var/adm/YaST/ProdDB/prod_00000001 and setting =YouUrl: to your own server, like http://server.on.my.local.lan/ Could perhaps be useful in a business setting, I don't know Note: i tested this on an 8.2 machine, I have no idea if it works the same on 8.1

Interesting!

My 8.1 has there: -LabelMap: =Timezone: America/Los_Angeles =DescriptionDir: ./suse/setup/descr =DataDir: ./suse =YouUrl: =YouType: =YouPath: i386/update/8.1 So the server is not set, or it uses a default. Interesting... now I know why it suggested Los Angeles time, even if I bought the Spanish version :-) -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
