I'm running 7.1 with a vanilla 2.4.3 kernel and have a nvidia TNT2 chipset. I've been using the x4.0.3 nv driver but now I'v got the latest from the nvidia site. All is installed and working like a champ. Only problem is when I try to shutdown the machine I get a black screen and the machine does not shutdown. I have to hit the reset button. I'm not using a JFS so it's a bit anoying having to go though all the fsck's to get back up. I've read MANY of the nvidia posts and can't find one that matches this problem. Anyone know of this BLACK screen of nvidia while trying to shut down and possibly a fix???? Thanks in advance Mark
I have the same problem with my GF2-MX. It seems the drivers don't release the que and therefore the only way to get back to the shell screen is to A) when the KDM login gui comes up go straight for "reboot to console", or B) reboot. If you find an answer to this please let me know. I suspect it's a function of the kernel/glx drivers from nVidia and either SuSE or nVidia will need to fix this. -----Original Message----- From: markh@compro.net [mailto:markh@compro.net] Sent: Thursday, April 26, 2001 1600 To: suse-linux-e@suse.com Subject: [SLE] Another nvidia ? This is a long standing problem with KDM and the nVidia drivers. They are binary only so nothing can be done until nVidia fixes the issue. The only work around is not to use KDM and just boot to a prompt..then type startx. After you exit your respective WM it should just return you to the prompt. * crrey (crrey@home.com) [010426 14:56]: =>I have the same problem with my GF2-MX. Thanks. I was afraid of that... Damn I wish they would release their source code. -- Mark Hounschell dmarkh@cfl.rr.com
Thanks. I was afraid of that... Damn I wish they would release their source code.
Time for me to show my ignorance. ;) When I installed my nVidia stuff for the 2.4.3 kernel, I downloaded source packages from their web site, compiled them and they worked fine. Presumably there's more to the package than those source files, because people are often complaining on here that nVidia should "release their source". What source code (ie, of what) haven't they released?

The ``source'' portion is ``just'' os-interface.c os-registry.c and nv.c which are basdically the ``glue'' between the kernel and their binary drivers. IIRC the nvidia drivers have 2 parts, an OS (Win/Linux) independent part and an OS dependant part. A small subset of the IOS dependant part is the ``glue''. This glue bit is available in sourc code.
