Hi people! This morning I'm very confuse. I really don't know what to do. I read a lot of threads on the list about suse 8.0 and I don't know if it will work and if I must keep it. I ordered SuSe Update 8.0 and I will receive it this morning. Is it possible to return it, I bought it from SuSe? I like the products that suse do and I use it for a while but I ask me if it's not better to keep 7.3 with the lot of bugs that 8.0 seems to have. Someone can help me to decide and tell me what you think? Another side of me tell me to try it because it's probably the best that I have. Also, I want to try KDE 3. So is there really a lots of big bugs in 8.0 or if it is ok? just minor bugs? It still have something I must learn to be happy with linux but these questions are for other threads. Thanks for your help _________________________________________________________________ Envoyez et recevez des messages Hotmail sur votre périphérique mobile : http://mobile.msn.com

I have (had) 7.2 and switched immediately to 8.0. The thing that gets me though is that 8.0 seems to run much faster on my machine (amd k6-3d with 256megs and 2 30gig drives. Every time I tried to upgrade to a new windows version (my pre-linux days which are entirely gone now) I basically had to get a new machine. go figure.\ My advise: stop complaining and install the suse 8.0. Dive in and enjoy Harry AnonymousCoward wrote:

My opinion is that the bugs are very minor. There were minor bugs in 7.3 as well. The bugs that affected me probably account for a tiny percentage of most users. I've not had any problems with KDE3 and I think 8.0 is a great release. Why not give it a try to see how it works on your PC? Best Regards, Keith -- LPIC-2, MCSE, N+ Got spam? I've found SuSE8 to be the best yet. I installed it on my desktop computer without any problems at all. I haven't run inot any of the problems posted on the list... yet. I have been having minor issues installing it on a laptop. Mostly due to the hardware being a bit odd. It's a good opportunity for me to do a bit of reading, and learning... Hello, Originally, I had a USB mouse problem on my install of 8.0. But I was able to get it going with a little persistence. I'd say go ahead and install 8.0. If you run into problems post here. Chances are it can be resolved to your satisfaction. Once you have it up and running, I think you will agree that it is the neatest looking Open Source effort so far. Terry Bassett
I was one of the 1st people to "complain" about a feature in the program YaST1 which has been discontinued in favor of only having YaST2. Please let me assure you that version 8.0 is far more stable and functional overall than previous releases. Also, please let me point out that I find, from reading and following other distribution forums and posts, that the SuSE is by far the more response of Linux distrubutor than the other vendors in my opinion. I have every confidence that the development team and management will respond and rectify/update the OS as per the clientele's request. So, to sum it up I highly recommend version 8.0. Many of the systems are improved and will continue to be polished as time goes on. SuSE is "extremely" diligent and comprehensive about the products they deliver in my humble opinion. KDE 3 is far more stable and functional in almost all respects, and those features that need fixing or might at first have a bug here or there will be short lived, since the developers at KDE and SuSE are in a constantly working at improving and expanding the programs and systems functionality. Hardware detection is much better and more complete. New features such as back-up features are more accessible and the users and administrators will find many more options for configuring the systems. If the subject of "all the patches" that are available since the release of 8.0 are of concern to you. I must point out that I find this gratifying. Insofar that "all" new products will have patches and the fact that there are indeed patch to the new version is testimony to the continued commitment to product assurance and customer satisfaction. Consider the alternative, Microsoft only release patchs after their clientele complain or vunerabilities have been made public and threaten Microsoft marketing strategy. With SuSE, and Linux in general, anyone that has an issue or finds a deficiency in a program has direct access to the developer. Hence, the product is in a continual state of improvement. So, utilize this feature and install the needed patchs or upgrades. That's what assures you and others of the best product and system available. I for one am very pleased overall with version 8.0 and my complaints are my input to the company in an attempt to help them round out the product and polish it. Hope this helps. Yep Curtis is right, Ignore our moanings, even mine !! Looking back on the hassle I had with 7.3 ( I didnt realise at the start ) 8.0 is excellent. More SDB documentation will slowly appear on the issues that have popped up, so its an ongoing support thing. 7.3 gave me endless nightmares with kde3 and certain gnome things. I never got my SBlive working once again I broke the setup. With 8.0 I'm pretty happy with the new 2.4.18 kernel, this time Im going to try and stick with it instead of fiddling. Go ahead with 8.0, I think you will be surprised. Actually I seem to remember lots of moans about 7.3 when it appeared. I've just installed 8.0 on a machine which will be an internet server - email/dialout etc for a charity where I'm IT Volunteer. This is the first time I feel I can leave linux running and not worry about supporting it. dids

Hi Martin et al.... First of all, most people have little or no problems with Linux or SuSE at all. Your (and mine) big problem is that reading this list you think "Oh God! everyone is having problems!". Well, that's not true. The guys on this list are all (or for the most part) pushing the bleeding edge of Linux. At that edge you will have problems. If all you want to do is run Linux and have fun, SuSE is the best for that. I promise you that for 9 out of 10 problems that you have the answer will be that you need to learn something. And this list is the best (and cheapest) school you can be in. Remember we're here to help each other!
