viewing videos using Windows Media Player and Quicktime and SuSE 9.3 -- how to do it?
Hello, everyone. Using SuSE 9.3 and Kaffeine I can view all sorts of video formats, but I cannot view anything that would require Windows Media Player or Quicktime. Would sure appreciate help with proper codecs or other applicable solution. I am using Firefox 1.0.7 and Konqueror 3.4.0. For example, if I go to www.cnn.com and click on any of the buttons that say "watch," a window will open that says: "Plug In Warning. The CNN.com video experience is optimized for Windows Media Player 9 or above. No Windows Media Player detected. Get the player." And it has a button there that will take me to the Microsoft website where, presumably, I could get WMP 9 or 10 if I were running Windows. For an example of my problem with Quicktime, please see http://www.boardsmag.com/screeningroom/commercials/2183 Going to this page I am asked to download a plugin, but when I try I can't get anything, and I get error messages about the missing plugins. Can anyone help? Thanks! Gil

Alan and all, At the moment I have a working set up that allows me to view the following using kaffeine: .mov .wmv .mpg .avi .asx .asf I have these rpms installed: libdvdcss-1.2.8-2.network.i386.rpm libxine1-1.1.0cvs-050815.i686.rpm w32codec-0.52-1.i386.rpm xine-mozilla-plugin-0.2-050815.i586.rpm xine-ui-0.99.4cvs-050815.i586.rpm On a suggestion by a list member I just updated the w32 codec rpm by installing: w32codec-all-20050412-0.pm.0.i586.rpm That codec specifically mentions Quicktime, but it did not make any difference. I still cannot view Quicktime or Windows Media Player files. I am concerned about going to packman and grabbing everything in sight without knowing what I am grabbing. I don't want to destroy what's working well now. But I do want to add Quicktime and Windows Media Player capabilities. So, I see the following additional rpms on packman under "multimedia/xine-lib." Should I get some or all of these and install them: alsa-1.0.10-0.pm.0.i586.rpm libtheora-1.0alpha5-0.pm.0.i686.rpm libvorbis-1.1.1-0.pm.0.i686.rpm libxine1-1.1.1-0.pm.2.i686.rpm speex-1.1.11.1-0.pm.0.i686.rpm Are there other rpms I need specifically for Quicktime and Windows Media Player? Thanks! :o) Gil

Did you have to manually copy the mplayerplug-in.so file to firefox/plugins? It wouldn't work for me until I did that (after YASTing mplayerplug-in), but afterwards it was fine (this is with Firefox 1.5, which doesn't appear to have the Help/About Plugins menu). The only lingering issue I have is an odd video refresh problem, where if I alt-tab'd to another window while the video is buffering (slow connection), when I come back the plugin window stays gray unless I grab the window and move it around. But I don't know if that's a plugin problem or something specific to my video setup. Oh, well, it's pretty minor.

I just completed a lengthy thread on this exact topic wherein I provided a thorough description of mplayerplug-in link locations. rpm should install the .so and .xpt files in /usr/lib/browser-plugins and place links where they are needed. If you have to manually intervene, the thread I've referenced can be viewed here (use the 'prev' and 'next' in thread to navigate): http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=suse-linux-e&m=113493418520988&w=2 Also, "about:plugins" (no quotes) in the address bar has always worked. The help menu item was merely a convenient shortcut.

I have the same behavior on this system, too. It isn't a show-stopper for me (pun intended) ;-) so I haven't felt compelled to bother with it. regards, - Carl

Here's something anomalous: I went to the page the OP mentioned (<http://www.boardsmag.com/screeningroom/commercials/2183>) and saw the puzzle-piece icon indicating a suitable plug-in was not available. And sure enough, looking at the "About Plug-Ins..." (Help menu) page I see the MPlayer plug-in is not listed. So I went to YaST Software Management to see what's up ('cause I use MPlayer from time to time and I thought I recalled installing MPlayer plug-in) and it shows the package mplayerplug-in to be installed. So I forced a re-install, restarted Mozilla and now the "About Plug-Ins" page _does_ show mplayerplugin and furthermore I can now see that charming Coca Cola ad. I'm not sure how this situation came about. Probably it had to do with the order in which I installed and / or updated the various packages involved.

There is definitely something in this? I had all plugins working fine and (from memory) updated Firefox. Even though the plugins were still installed, they had in fact dissappeared from Firefox. So, I could not play the ad mentioned by the OP either - same 'get plugin' message. I updated my Packman repository (I use USA mirror), removed any 'pluginreg.dat' files (they re-generate) forced a re-install of the mplayer-plugin with Yast (with Firefox not loaded), loaded Firefox and 'whalah' - all relevant plugins returned. Go back to the site and the ad plays just fine. I am sure I have seen this before. I think when you do anything of significance to Firefox (certainly an update) you have to re-install your plugins! I think it has to do with these cryptically named profile folders that get generated. For what it's worth, all works again here! Paul.

Thanks! Gil ========== Gil Once you've installed everything and all the plugins are correct, be sure to refresh the plugin list in Konq settings. It won't do it automatically, unless you have told it to do so each time it starts. Also, be sure your kaffeine plugin is installed or you have told kaffeine settings to use it for such things. Firefox does not always get the plugins automatically like Mozilla, so you may have to compare the plugins in /opt/mozilla to the ones in /opt/MozillaFirefox directories. They should both be the same. Quicktime codecs are included in the w32codecs file from Packman, so if your kaffeine plays wmv, it should do quicktime also. Sometimes the quicktime files are slower to load and decode than the windows files, so if you are expecting an immediate response, it may not happen.
I'm using KMplayer and mplayerplug-in for my setup and everything works fine. The quicktime site you supplied started right away for me in Konq and CNN is just stupid people running a Windows sponsored site! Good, got that off my chest. But, mine still works on it as well. When it tells you the plugin is not there, just continue to the video, it'll play, if you have refreshed Konq settings for plugins and it found it! regards, Lee

Hi, Pat. Well, I do not know if everything I need has been installed, and I also don't know if all the plug-ins are correct. However, I've done the Konqui "refresh" thing numerous times. Does not seem to have made any difference. In fact Konqui now crashes everytime I try to play one of the "watch" videos from CNN.com.
Also, be sure your kaffeine plugin is installed or you have told kaffeine settings to use it for such things.
If I type about:plugins to the Firefox browser I get a long list of plugins, but kaffeine is not there! I don't know how to get it into this list. RE: kaffeine settings.... How do I tell kaffeine to use the plug-in? I don't see anything in the kaffeine settings screens.
Firefox does not always get the plugins automatically like Mozilla, so you may have to compare the plugins in /opt/mozilla to the ones in /opt/MozillaFirefox directories. They should both be the same.
I do not have /opt/mozilla. I do have some plugins in /opt/MozillaFirefox. If there are specific plugins I should look for in /opt/MozillaFirefox please tell me which and I can let you know if they are there. Should I be concerned that I do not have /opt/mozilla?
Quicktime codecs are included in the w32codecs file from Packman, so if your kaffeine plays wmv, it should do quicktime also. Sometimes the quicktime files are slower to load and decode than the windows files, so if you are expecting an immediate response, it may not happen.
Well I finally got Quicktime running (in Firefox), but by a somewhat circuitous route. I used Crossover Office's "office set-up" feature and let it find and install Quicktime. But nothing I downloaded from Packman seemed to work. Quicktime only worked when Crossover Office found it. It now shows up on the K-Menu in <windows applications/programs>. So now when I click on that URL I supplied in my first e-mail I am able to see the Coca Cola commercial. Presumably I'll now be able to see any video where previously I got only that little icon of the puzzle piece. Note, however, that Konqui crashes when trying to view the same video.
Well, as I mentioned, Konqui crashes now whenever I try to view either a Quicktime or Windows Media Player file. Note also that I tried to install Windows Media Player 9 and 10 via Crossover Office (same technique I used for Quicktime). But neither seems to install even though Crossover says the installs are complete. Neither shows up on the K Menu, and neither launches. So something is screwy there. Here is the partial printout from about:plugins. I hope the columns line up so you can read them. It seems to indicate that Windows Media Player is there. But it doesn't play. Maybe I have to initialize something?? Windows Media Player Plug-in Dynamic Link Library File name: npcxoffice.npdsplay.so Npdsplay dll MIME Type Description Suffixes Enabled application/asx Media Files * Yes video/x-ms-asf-plugin Media Files * Yes application/x-mplayer2 Media Files * Yes video/x-ms-asf Media Files asf, asx,* Yes video/x-ms-wm Media Files wm,* Yes audio/x-ms-wma Media Files wma,* Yes audio/x-ms-wax Media Files wax,* Yes video/x-ms-wmv Media Files wmv,* Yes video/x-ms-wvx Media Files wvx,* Yes Would it serve any purpose to post the printout of about:plugins from Firefox? It's a lot, and I don't want to clog up everyone's e-mail. Anyway.... a little progress getting Quicktime to play in Firefox, but no progress at all on Windows Media Player files. Please advise. Thanks! Gil
