I found that when I installed the AMD-64bit version of 10.3 on my laptop that I was further ahead by taking the defaults as presented re: the suggested packages. Installing other wanted stuff after the system was booted and running was a breeze.

I have an old Sony Vaio laptop with OpenSuse 10.2 installed. It is in good working order, no hardware problems. When I try to upgrade it to 10.3, the installer hangs very early on. The system boots from DVD, I select "installation", it asks me for language, I select English (UK), then media check - it passes. When I click "next", I get the "wait" cursor, but nothing happens. What can I do to debug this?

Which model of VAIO. The VAIO is a little eccentric with Linux at the best of times and getting it going may require a bit of tweaking.
