Dear All Anyone know what this might be about ?.... One of my SuSE 7.1 AMD-K6-2 machines has started to do some strange things in the CD-ROM department. When I try to mount it with either a terminal window or by clicking on the icon in KDE 2 I get the following error message...... [mntent]: warning: no final newline at the end of the /etc/fstab mount: /dev/cdrom: can't read superblock I'd really like to get some more hardware into the machine via the CD-ROM. Can't download it too much to download. I haven't edited the fstab file at all. The fstab is below......... /dev/hda3 / reiserfs defaults 1 1 /dev/hda1 /boot ext2 defaults 1 2 /dev/cdrom /cdrom auto noauto,user,exec 0 0 devpts /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0 /dev/fd0 /floppy auto noauto,user 0 0 proc /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/hda4 /usr reiserfs defaults 1 2 /dev/hda2 swap swap defaults 0 2 /dev/hdd /LS120 auto noauto,user 0 0 I had thought that running the rescue system might sort this out but last time I tried on this machine it failed miserably because the disk uses Reiser FS and the rescue system doesn't like that. Thanks -- Richard http://www.sheflug.co.uk
Is the last line in /etc/fstab right, /dev/hdd ? If it is hard disk "d" then should it have a partition number with it? This is just a guess. -- -------------------------------------------------------------- Dennis James | dennisjames@geocities.com Registered Linux User #169330 ( http://counter.li.org ) Pure Linux (SUSE) User GnuPGP key available on request GnuPGP Fingerprint AF36 E256 D9DA 8CB2 64DD 199B 9373 F605 1314 083B On Sun, 24 Jun 2001, Richard Ibbotson wrote:

/dev/hdd is the LS120 drive. If you put something like hdd4 then the fstab instructs the system to look for separate partitions on the LS120 floppy disk. Not much use if it does that. Other thing is... forgot to mention earlier on... I can't boot from the CD-ROM drive even after changing things around in the BIOS settings. Had no problem with it before. The CD-ROM is definitely working. It's not broken. Thanks -- Richard

That would suggest to me it is before the OS loads. If you are sure your CD-ROM is good, I would try the secondary HD controller. Maybe it is disabled in BIOS Setup. -- Joe & Sesil Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris "All I have seen teaches me to trust the Creator for all I have not seen." --Ralph Waldo Emerson

Hi Richard, for your CDROM problem, did you try to boot with the other disk? CD1 seems to have a 2.88 MB image, that causes trouble with some drives. Seen that at work, the NT4 CD booted, but not CD1. just a guess Juergen -- =========================================== __ _ Juergen Braukmann juergen.braukmann@gmx.de| -o)/ / (_)__ __ ____ __ Tel: 0201-743648 dk4jb@db0qs.#nrw.deu.eu | /\\ /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ===========================================_\_v __/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\
