As far I can see, the issue with xtables is it needs the modules to be present in the respective kernel directory under /lib/modules. So far I was not very successful in getting those modules loaded when the extra directory is sym-linked to the directory of the currently running kernel. At the very least it taints the kernel. Without the xtables-addons xtables complains with various kinds of error messages. In my case it breaks "GEOIP" which we depend on to filter inbound traffic. -------- Original Message -------- From: Marcus Meissner To: Holger Jakob Cc: opensuse@opensuse.org Date: 2018-11-12 07:06 GMT Subject: [opensuse] xtables-addons-kmp-default not updated to latest kernel-default version Hi, Does it still load? So far I was not very successful in getting those modules loaded when the extra directory is sym-linked to the directory of the currently running kernel. At the very least it taints the kernel. Without the xtables-addons xtables complains with various kinds of error messages. In my case it breaks "GEOIP" which we depend on to filter inbound traffic.

Hi,
Does it still load?
The KMPs do not need to be updated for every kernel release when the kabi stays the same.
If it does not load we need to see what is still broken.

Is there any new to the issue? I don't see any bug reports related to this for Leap 15.0. Any recommendation where I can get a current package from?

This breaks xtables-geoip as module xt_geoip is not found in /lib/modules/4.12.14-lp150.12.16-default/
I have to downgrade to 12.13
A similar issue has been reported on 8 Aug 2018 for 12.10 so it seems to be a reoccurring issue.
https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1104300
Unfortunately due to comment that had absolutely nothing to do with original problem bug was classified incorrectly and so effectively ignored.
The problem was *not* that module required older kernel version, but
Warning: /lib/modules/4.12.14-lp150.11-default is inconsistent
which apparently prevented weak updates from working.
I am not sure what path forward you are suggesting. The bug you refer to was considered fixed and closed in August. Do we need a new bug opened now? This effectively prevents me from migrating from Leap 42.3 to Leap 15 since May.

So either something is wrong with xt_IPMARK or it is triggering some weird bug in binutils. Any chance this can be resolved? Maybe by disabling IPMARK or by back-porting a later version of xtables-addons to 4.12? If not, I guess we'll have to keep manually linking the "extra" directory into the current kernel modules followed by a "depmod". Also, having a note in that direction added to the release notes would be of sure help. Am 13.11.2018 um 19:41 schrieb Andrei Borzenkov:

Actually even installing this KMP does not add weak links to existing kernels. Due to

those "unknown symbols" cause weak-modules2 to abort.
