I didn't find ws awkward. I easily learned its keyboard and found it quite easy and fast.
Agreed.
Actually, I found wordperfect awkward.
Same here- those function keys sequences drove me crazy. I find learning Emacs easier. I stuck with Wordstar under Desqview for the longest time (I started using WS under CP/M on an Osborne IIB)- I hated Windows right From the beginning. I think I still have Wordstar 5.5 in its original box somewhere.
And similar with the successors: amipro, word, openoffice... ws could be managed fast without a mouse.
Very true, that is one of the reasons why I don't use a word processor (the other being that I prefer to keep everything as text files). Emacs' Muse mode: http://www.emacswiki.org/cgi-bin/wiki/EmacsMuse is all I need. Also, I haven't found a PIM as powerful as the Muse (with wiki module loaded) + tables.el (for complex tables) http://table.sourceforge.net/ + planner mode: http://www.emacswiki.org/cgi-bin/wiki/PlannerMode + remember-mode: http://www.emacswiki.org/cgi-bin/wiki/RememberMode + Gnus: http://www.emacswiki.org/cgi-bin/emacs-en?CategoryGnus + bbdb: http://www.emacswiki.org/cgi-bin/emacs-en?CategoryBbdb + emacs-w3m: http://www.emacswiki.org/cgi-bin/wiki/emacs-w3m combo. Wow! Emacs drives me crazy. So does vi. I keep using jstar for text, or OOo for word processing. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Wow! Emacs drives me crazy.
It took me a year or so to really get the hang of it, but once you learn Emacs, you will never leave it. Emacs can become very addictive.
So does vi.
I do use vi for some quick stuff. However, there is only one command you really need to know about vi: (Disclaimer: Sorry 666, I mean vi, users- couldn't resist this piece of humour) http://www.dina.kvl.dk/~abraham/religion/editors-101.html ;-) Charles

I have used emacs, but I find it far from addictive. Yes, it has many nice features, but the keyboard is... is... crazy. Anything non standard, meaning, no word star like, is bad by my definition :-p I only have ten fingers and a limited biocomputer to handle them, you know.

X'-) Fortunately, exiting emacs is far easier :-p Yes, that's the first thing I ever learnt about vi. And I have used it a bit, too. Happily, the rescue dvd contains joe, so I no longer need vi to correct grub or fstab entries in vi in rescue mode >:-) - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
