[opensuse] RE: enourmous number of compressed files under .beagle subdirectory under users home directory Open SUSE 10.2
My home directory contains the hidden file /.beagle . There is a subdirectory named TextCache. It currently hold 155 Subdirectories each with aprox 180 .Gzip files. This is an enormous amount of HDD space and there appears no limit to the size it will grow. Can anyone tell me its purpose. I use a KDE standard Menu and I only use beagle as a search for text on a page in OO or Firefox. Is there any way I can curb this mass invasion of files being written. I am loath to delete any files are there is a .DB (guess) primary index file at the bottom of the TextCache Directory. Many Thanks Scott

There was a recent thread "Beagle Configuration" where you will find pointers and info on beagle. P.S. I notice you use an "S/MIME Cryptographic Signature" of 3.3 KiB. Why don't you switch to a much smaller PGP signature instead, which is more than adequate for a mail list? I mention because of the final size of your email. There are many people on broadband, but there are still many people that don't, and some of them paying metered connection rates. Plus the added sizes to all the archives ;-) - -- Cheers, Carlos E. It's used for the generation of snippets in search results. It stores the searchable textual content of documents for which it would be too slow to extract the relevant text at search-time. The use of the word "cache" here is a bit of a misnomer, because it never expires. (Well, items are removed when you delete files.) You can safely delete the directory if you want. It won't cause any problems, but you won't get snippets in search results. However, documents indexed after that point will still go into a recreated TextCache. If you're using Beagle 0.2.16.3(*), you can pass in --disable-text-cache to the beagled process; this will delete any existing text cache and prevent anything from being written to it in the future.
